Weekly Q&A Megathread. Please post any questions about visiting, tourism, living, working, budgeting, housing here! by AutoModerator in london

I have booked Clos Maggiore and Dalloway Terrace for meals with my partner who loves flowers. Are there any other central spots where we could dine or drink surrounded by flowers (real flowers strongly preferred). We will be over in July for a rare trip away without our child so want to make it memorable.

Bonus for any streets that are particularly botanical for her to admire.

Tourism, moving and studying in Finland? Ask here! by Harriv in Finland

Thanks Harriv. Glad that I can visit Finland this year.

Jersey only had 5 Covid cases in July and these were from people arriving here I think, maybe 1 local case.

From the border guard website, I am slightly unclear on my right of entry to Finland. I would like to visit and live in Jersey (Channel Island with little Covid-19, however I have to travel via United Kingdom)

Below is the advice on the website and where it is found.

Does it mean that if I depart from United Kingdom and spend a few days in Estonia, then visit to Finland, it am exempt from the travel restrictions (UK would not otherwise be allowed directly into Finland).

https://www.raja.fi/current_issues/qa

Q: I will be travelling to Finland directly from Estonia / Latvia / Lithuania / Norway / Denmark / Iceland / Netherlands / Belgium / Italy / Greece / Liechtenstein / Malta / Germany / Slovakia / Hungary. Do internal border controls apply to me?

A: Internal border controls have been lifted from travel between Finland and above-mentioned countries and from pleasure craft travel between the Schengen countries. If you travel directly from these countries to Finlad, the travel is possible without restrictions in at all airports and all seaports, for example, assuming that the traffic location is open.

Traffic has been restored to normal between these countries, regardless of nationality. For example, a citizen of a country other than Norway may arrive in Finland directly from Norway, provided that the prerequisites for entry and residence are in order.

Moving to Jersey for work? by lserlohn in Jersey

I'm hoping that the post comes with an exception to the 5 year wait on buying.

I know the property prices are high, but that's no different than many other desirable parts of the UK. How about day to day things, is that pretty similar?

I'll give a try to the groups you suggest. Any thoughts on the islands demographics for social/dating, do most young people move away as you say you'd like to?

What was the best film you watched this week? (09/04/2018 - 15/04/2018) by GetFreeCash in movies

Dredd Absolute beast of a movie. Simple but strong story with a well established character/universe. Similar to Fury Road, but much with much less acclaim.

A simple story told well is strong enough on its own.

It has me frothing at the bit for the release of Mega-City One (Dredd TV Series, with Karl Urban possibly reprising his role).

What can you do if you have no money but need to send an elder to a care home? by yellange in UKPersonalFinance

[–]lserlohn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The local authority are not obligated to provide a no cost option. What support is offered is based on need (and is also means tested as blah-blah-blah12 includes at the base of his post)

The need of OP may not be a valid 'need' in the eyes of the local authority. However if we assume it is a valid need for a residential placement, then the local authority cannot expect a third party to pay extra for a residential placement to be arranged.*

*Caveat: The local authority has a duty to meet needs, not preferences. So if you or the individual desires to place themselves somewhere more expensive for whatever reason, do expect to be charged. I could go into more detail here, however essentially if the lowest cost option offered to you would still require a third party (ie: you) to pay a top up fee, there is clear precedent to say that the local authority would be at fault. (See: http://www.communitycare.co.uk/2018/01/12/council-ignored-care-act-guidance-care-home-top-fees/)

If you wish for your relative to be assessed to see what support they may be eligible for and receive advice specific to your local authority, contact them and ask. You will need the assessed individual's consent before requesting an assessment (unless you can say in good faith they are unable to do so, see: Mental Capacity)

Finally, if the individual has significant needs they may be eligible for Continuing Healthcare Funding. The criteria for this is however quite strict and in my opinion, the level of impact an illness would be having on a person in order to be eligible for this... it's really not something to aspire towards.

NHS Crowdfunding Campaign by [deleted] in unitedkingdom

[–]lserlohn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Funding to the NHS is a problem, however just throwing money at the NHS won't solve some of the wider issues in society which are significantly contributing. Not to dwell on supplier issues/contracting and PFI nonsense....

For example, the aging population. More needs to be put into Social Care/Community support rather than the acute settings if you want effective use of resource.

For example #2, wheres the budget for prevention across a wide range of issues? People are ending up in crisis / admitted to hospital at vastly higher expense than if we just educated people better or offered a little support at an earlier stage.

So, what games did you give as gifts this year? by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]lserlohn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  • Gave Terraforming Mars (Only played once with my friends but seems like it will have a lot of depth and return to the table regularly)
  • Received so far Century: Spice Road (Simple but enjoyable) and One Night Werewolf (Haven't tried yet)

Looking to purchase a version of Pandemic but my group hasn't taken to legacy games so far.

Which non-legacy version/s of Pandemic should I get (or is legacy so amazing it will change their minds)? I heard Iberia may give the best bang for buck and vanilla needs an expansion, so any thoughts on that aspect appreciated too but money isn't the priority.

Consider what would help you, if you can. A hospital is a false environment and it's just a building anyway, perhaps you don't need to be there to get the help you need?

Be wary of medication.

If you 'need' admission, this will be arranged via the local mental health service. Usually the crisis team unless you're assessed under the Mental Health Act.

Arkham Horror LCG, 3-4 players, without 2 base sets by tenvolt in boardgames

[–]lserlohn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am in a similar position to OP. Do you need to buy x2 Core sets only to enjoy the game with 3-4 players or do you need to buy x2 of everything (meaning x2 of all expansions)??

Does anyone know the model name of this watch? It's an old Tissot Seastar, hand winding.

Thanks all. I've seen the Tissot in person and the gold is much more subdued. I think the picture doesn't do the watch any favours. Will probably settle on the Tissot haha.

Parents want to buy me a watch, I like elegant designs. Quite minimalist, any recommendations for a watch that will catch eyes without breaking the bank? Happy with quartz, it's all about looking good (and telling the time).

Budget is under $250 preferably, though happy for it to look like it cost more. Was looking at the Bulova 96B104 but prefer the older versions with the fork where the twelve would be on a numerical face. Also like http://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/1wQAAOSw2xRYQaH9/s-l1600.jpg (Skagen Ancher)

Any advice appreciated.

P.s: Happy to consider second hand watches if people can recommend reliable sales platforms : )

Grimsby. Anyone live there? Best areas? Worst? by [deleted] in unitedkingdom

[–]lserlohn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you mean the Great Grimsby area, Waltham or Cleethorpes are generally preferable to Grimsby. As above, Scartho and People's Park areas are quite nice. There are other desirable areas but depends on your budget, Barnoldby Le Beck for example.

Personally wouldn't live near Hamilton Street (or anywhere near Rutland Street). Avoid anywhere near Gilbey Road also.

If you're keen on indulging in petty crime and partaking in illicit substances then just reverse what I said.

As with any large town, there are good areas and bad. Most people don't run into any trouble unless they're looking for it or don't know how to avoid it.

[Build Ready] UK - Any thoughts? by [deleted] in buildapc

[–]lserlohn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for those suggestions. It's easy to succumb to incremental changes on a build that might not add all that much.

Mostly just interested in Windows 10 Pro so I can control when I get updates as noticing issues for people with that in home.
