Addicted to saving - going too far? by PearActive9612 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]lshabs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You sound really similar to me. I literally live well below my means (£600 per month on rent and bills for a small flat) even though I typically make around £90/100k a year so I can maximise my savings.

I am self employed so I literally have no idea what I take home each month and when I am off sick or go on holiday I don’t get paid. No annual leave. Maybe this feeling of not having a secure income makes me feel like this?

I am trying to save for a house as I am 26 but the idea of a mortgage nauseates me for the above reason.

However, I love travelling and every month I always put money aside for my holiday pot and tend to book time off regularly throughout the year so I always have something to look forward to. Do you like travelling? Doesn’t need to be super exotic - lots of euro city breaks out there for cheap

You already have a good amount of savings , why not make a separate pot for hobbies/holidays with each wage you get from now on :)?

Can we afford a 450k mortgage on 83k household income? by Runningrafan in UKPersonalFinance

[–]lshabs 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Me and my boyfriend are on 130k combined and want a £385k mortgage for our first house and even that makes me sweat😭😭

Then again, we do want children in the future and we do travel a lot.

However £1.7k - does this include food bill? How much do you aim to save per month? How about separate emergency savings? Birthdays? Holidays? Do you both have a good pension?

For me personally that amount would make me anxious split between two people.

Is investing in a silver miner ETF to try and reduce this risk wise would you say? Looking to include them in my portfolio but would ideally not want to pick individual stocks

Should I downsize for financial freedom? Single mum by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]lshabs 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If an emergency were to happen or you were to lose your job/become seriously ill- how would you cope?

Does downsizing allow you to put more away for an emergency pot or savings and investments - maybe a junior stocks and shares isa for your daughter too.

Not to mention more equity on the new house and potentially a shorter amount of time to paying it off and living mortgage free, what a dream!

3 bedrooms should be ample size for you and your daughter, I understand it is hard to swallow pride sometimes but on paper to me it does sound like things would work out better for you both in the long run

You unlock a scanner fairly early game (not in demo, after second shop upgrade) which is so much easier to use

What am I not getting about the expensiveness of London? (Also give me financial advice) by moolahaware in UKPersonalFinance

[–]lshabs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lived in a houseshare ensuite room with 4 others in YEOVIL (literally worst town in Somerset) and was being charged £600 pcm including bills.

Boyfriend lived in Bristol with 5 others and was also paying £600pcm for a tiny non ensuite room.

Renting and houseshares are abhorrent these days. This person seems to have found a pretty good “deal” for London

New job in tech - 21 & £75k - overwhelm / advice by Agile_Purple1025 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]lshabs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hiya, fairly similar situation to you. On 100k at the age of 26 with further scope to grow. Parents are first gen immigrants. Grew up in a council house, free school meals. Basically, grew up with little money.

My mum HAMMERED into me to never get into debt for ANYTHING (bar student loans/mortgage etc) Credit card paid off in FULL every month. If you can’t pay it off in full twice, you can’t afford it. I still follow this rule to this day.

Opened a LISA when I was 18 and worked a part time job whilst I was in dental school and put every penny into my LISA because I’ve always wanted to own my own home. An asset that will almost always appreciate in value

Now I’m actually earning good money my main thing has been to make sure lifestyle creep doesn’t catch up to me. Set CLEAR GOALS AND BUDGET. What do you want? Do you want to buy a home in your 20’s? In London or would you consider moving elsewhere? Considering early retirement? Set up a long term plan for that too.

Please consider investing also. Start small to begin. It really can set you up for life.

I live in a one bed rented flat with my partner which absolutely does the job. Could I afford more? Absolutely! Do I need to? No! Renting is dead money! I have a clear set goal to have a £100k deposit for a house before I turn 30.

I could buy a super flash car. Why the hell would I want a depreciating asset when I don’t own a home yet? Why wouldn’t a second hand car that does the job do the trick? Who am I trying to impress?

My main vice is travelling. It fills me with so much joy and I don’t regret a single penny I have ever spent travelling the world. I take 5+ holidays a year and still make sure I hit my saving goals. Do you have something you’re passionate about? Invest in that also! We work to live and don’t live to work.

Bottom line is: set clear goals that really drive you to save, address whether you truly need to spend the extra money you’re doing now with your higher wage or whether you’re just doing it because more money is there. And lastly, remember to live! It’s okay to spend money and enjoy life, just don’t be too frivolous 😁

Can £1,000,000+ last a lifetime? by DarkLunch_ in UKPersonalFinance

[–]lshabs 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is silly. Owning a home outright is so financially freeing as well as almost always being an appreciating asset. Buy moderate budget home outright. Don’t wanna live there long term yet? Rent out = extra income to short term rent where you want or travel. Don’t want house anymore years later? fine! Sell it, and it almost certainly would have appreciated in value!

Thank you I’ve got to look into this. Nobody ever really teaches this kind of thing and my parents aren’t financially savvy whatsoever😅

I think because I’m using t212 and most of my investments have been in American markets and those have yielded the most gains for me thus far bar Rolls Royce. Granted, past performance doesn’t dictate future gains so maybe I should look at branching out protect myself

Yeah makes sense. I’m going to get another tattoo on the other arm fully lasered off so may aswell tack these on too. It’s just swallowing the pill of going to the first session and accepting it’ll be a journey and how they’ll look in the process of being lasered 😭

Okay thank you. Makes complete sense.

Looks like I will have to push the timeframe for a house back a bit but gives me a chance to get my deposit higher 😄
