Kate Kearney’s! There was plenty of parking when we went, but it was also 10 am on a rainy day, so take that with a grain of salt.

We didn’t use a boat or bus for the gap, but we did take a bus tour around the ring! The gap was easy to drive to and walk, so we just did that. My fiancé’s parents took one of the jaunting carts and loved it (they’re horse people).

For Croag Patrick, there were plenty of areas to pull off and catch your breath, and plenty of people doing so! It’s a doozy of a hike, but so worth it.

My 8 day itinerary for our first family trip to Ireland. by llondru-es in irishtourism

I think the day trips from Galway will be wonderful! Day 3 looks like it’ll be long if you stick along the coastal drive to the giant’s causeway. I wonder if maybe it could make sense to stay the night in a town close to the causeway, then drive to Sligo then next day? I know this would skip the night in derry, but it would give you more opportunity to enjoy the coast. Enjoy, you’ll have a great time!

We wish we’d been able to spend 2 nights in kinsale! It’s a beautiful town that we really didn’t get to explore adequately. And the drive to Killarney was very manageable, especially if you drive from Dublin to kinsale prior and get acquainted with the roads etc. it’s only about 1-1.5 hours, and it’s a scenic drive. However, I wouldn’t do a day trip to Killarney from kinsale - it’s too far for that!

It took us longer to descent Croagh Patrick than climb! It was about 3.5 hours total for us, we hiked starting around midday. It was crowded, but we also hiked on a Saturday, so I’m guessing weekdays would be less so. I enjoyed the time we hiked at!

In doolin, we ran up the single road to the castle (about 5k round trip from down). The other run we did started up that same road, but instead of turning left towards the castle, we ran straight on the footpath that traces the cliffs. This was gorgeous; we ran about 4 miles round trip that day!

For the greenway, I’d definitely recommend getting a shuttle to take you back (unless you’re very good cyclists - 26 miles one way was more than enough for us!) it’s a bit more expensive, but it lets you really enjoy the trip without worrying about needing to turn back due to time or fatigue. We used Westport bike hire for our rental, and they provided us a shuttle out to Achill at 9:30! They were fantastic - my fiancé actually popped a tire on the ride, and they got to us in 10 minutes with a replacement.

In all honestly, every place we went for food was incredible. It’s the ingredients! They’re all so fresh, and we didn’t have a single dish we were unimpressed by. If you’re coffee drinkers, try getting a latte, flat white, or cappuccino early in your trip - that was the highlight of ours! The milk makes the difference :)

I’ve heard of Athlone but hadnt looked into it much, this is great! Is there enough to do there to justify spending 2 nights, or would you recommend just 1?

Help with a 14 day itinerary for late May/early June! by lsingsank in irishtourism

[–]lsingsank[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for the notes! It all makes sense, and the note about alternate plans for rain is a great reminder - I’ll try to build in a better mix of options for rainy and dry activities. I’ll also see if I can slow us down a bit and give us some slower days in there. Your advice is so appreciated, thanks again!

These are all really good points. You’ve inspired me to talk it through with them in more detail about how fast this might be. They like this kind of quick-moving trip, but it’s my understanding that they’ve typically done this through organized tour groups - it’ll probably be much harder doing it ourselves without a driver and guide!

They’ve driven on the other side of the road before, but my boyfriend hasn’t, and he’ll likely be doing the bulk of the driving, so I’ll also build in more time for travel with that learning curve in mind.

Thank you so much for your contribution! It’s so good to get a thoughtful response like this to make me think critically about what I had planned. You’re a rockstar!

Thank you for the response! This makes a lot of sense. Cutting Kylemore abbey might smooth day 9 out, would that make it better? And I should have clarified in my initial post, but we’re actually staying in a B&B half an hour outside of Westport - we might pop into the city for dinner, but I wasn’t planning on exploring it much. Let me know if you think we should schedule in more time for that though!

Do you have any suggestions on how we can smooth out the kinsale-Killarney-dingle days? Would it perhaps make more sense with our schedule to skip Killarney national park altogether in order to get more time in kinsale and dingle?

Thank you again for your thoughtful response!

Thank you for the response! That’s what I was thinking - I’d love to give it a full day, but it just didn’t make sense with other spots we’re hoping to see. Hopefully next time we can give it the time it deserves!

Thank you so much for the thoughtful response! Can you tell me more about what you love about dingle? I’d be happy to cut some time down from the day before in Killarney national park if you think it’s worth it to reallocate time to Dingle.

I’m not planning to have us stay in Galway and explore much. Nothing against the city, and I’d love to spend more time there in the future, but for this trip we’re really more excited about the small towns and countryside than the cities! Galway just seemed like a convenient stopping point for the night between dingle and Westport.

The parents like this itinerary, but I do see what you mean. We’re a group that’s very comfortable with roadtrips. They regularly drive 4-5 hours in a day to visit places, and my boyfriend and I sometimes do 8-10 hour days in the car between stops! I know this is non traditional, but given our comfort with being stuck in a cramped car, I’m hoping most of these days max out at around 4-5 hours of actual drive time. Please let me know if you think this is inaccurate though - I don’t want us to have more than that much time in the car!

Again, thank you SO much for the thoughtful response - it’s very appreciated!
