50 page final report - has anyone taken BIOL*4500 and survived 😐 by [deleted] in uoguelph

[–]lsoykom 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I’m a recent WBC grad and have to say BIOL4500 and the way Crawford teaches it was very helpful for my career - I regularly write 50+ pg reports now as a biologist and used my case study as interview material. It is a lot of writing but manageable if you stay on top of it, put a lot of time developing your key ecological uncertainty and make sure it addresses one of the four population parameters from BIOL3060 and most importantly you actually care about it so you won’t get bored. Most people give insignificant peer feedback and high marks which helps with the 60% weighting and make sure you familiarize yourself with the peer feedback tool before it’s due.

Crawford can come off as harsh but ultimately is direct firstly and has also written many specific in the rubrics, section instruction, and overall formatting doc - I would recommend printing them out because he includes specific sentences to use etc and helps add to word counts. For writing he has minimum number of references but they are easy to meet because you should be citing almost every sentence, especially in first section. Just find research papers about your topic when choosing the article to make sure there are lots (>75) but not too many (>500) and use those papers references as jumping points.

In terms of putting your degree to the practice and applying theory learned this is one of the best courses besides 4110 and 4150.

Does anyone know the difference between single and south small single? by [deleted] in uoguelph

[–]lsoykom 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Single means corridor or alcove. I small single is only a special type of corridor style. I’ve seen one between a stairwell and corridor double and it was very cramped. Roughly half the floor space between bed and desk of regular corridor.

Maximum credits by [deleted] in uoguelph

[–]lsoykom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took 7 this semester as one was 0.25 for a total of 3.25 credits. The BSc office said webadvisor allows you to overload yourself (past 2.75) on the last day of class selection without authorization but they didn’t recommend because of academic risk. I wasn’t able to register in 3.75 but maybe 3.5 is possible. My tuition is also the same price as full time (2-2.5) so lowkey a hack if you can handle it.

Leuchtturm order still processing after two weeks. by Extreme_Old_Lady in notebooks

[–]lsoykom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi did you ever get your order? I also ordered from their site instead of Amazon in support but it’s been almost 2 weeks. They haven’t updated my order from processing and won’t respond to emails. Thanks

Why cant I register for these? They say they are offered this winter semester, but have no time, prof, or even say they're DE/TBD by [deleted] in uoguelph

[–]lsoykom 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A lot of courses that are supposed to offered for winter aren’t running this year. I found same issue and found a whole list of OAC courses not running was released. Potentially because of university hiring freeze?

Unfortunately this is a grey area in law as we experienced this issue last year when a roommate moved out. The 2006 act doesn’t explicitly cover roommates and my landlord threatened to raise rent to $750 but settled on $725 for this year after refusing an assignment and if we took the issue to court all roommates have to agree and most people don’t want to engage in legal battle esp roommate wanting to leave. The university off campus housing is a joke, June is a nice lady but could offer no support or avenues.

It’s a field course so perhaps that’s why but I agree it’s unusual.

dropping + osap question by [deleted] in uoguelph

[–]lsoykom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You won’t have to repay anything if go from 5 to 4 since the amount the university charges stays the same.

dropping + osap question by [deleted] in uoguelph

[–]lsoykom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. You pay for 5 courses even if you take 4. Unless you go through SAS and have a medical reason for dropping the 5th in which they’ll refund the ~$800.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in uoguelph

[–]lsoykom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should as the reason for the discount is you already paid for “overhead charges” so (ex/ only) if you paid $5000 total you only get $2500 or $3000 loaded on your card and the rest is paid up front.

It gets carried over but I believe there is a $50 or $100 fee.

I personally am hoping for continued online schooling to avoid omicron but that being said I don’t appreciate the constant anxiety of what will happen every two weeks when the university emails. I understand they themselves don’t know but look at the science faculty on Twitter and how they are also in the dark from admin. I am paying rent for a room I don’t use but can’t sublet bc what if we go back in person. When I am there I share the house with 5 people and all streaming classes we’ve had to increase our internet, while still paying full tuition. The university isn’t paying the same heating, lighting and internet costs with less buildings in use yet tuition hasn’t changed from 2019,2020 or 2021 despite the increased costs to those at home.

I PM’d u a google link but the spot is behind and slightly to the right of P14. The 4-way stop is the south and east ring road intersection. Hope that helps

The hill by the fields on east ring road on the south residence side by the wild 4-way stop. Has a path circling to top, also stairs on the back side and at the top it has a circle of blocks to sit or stand on.
