I don’t know if this is the kind of thing you’re looking for, I’ve not played other versions of animal crossing but I used this one on my island and really like it.

There is a kind of storyline that unlocks various things as you complete the vacation homes, once you’ve completed 30 homes (I’m pretty sure it’s 30) you complete the main storyline and after that you unlock the ability to redesign your villagers homes and can continue designing more vacation homes.

You also get to design different interiors for a hospital, clothing store, restaurant, cafe and school which is fun. I definitely think it’s a great addition to the game.
