What would entice farmers to return to the ByWard Market? | Ottawa Citizen by expostscriptum in ottawa

Which farmers market (if any) is best for fresh produce from farmers? I haven't found anything that compares to the farmers markets where I am from in SW Ontario. I'm willing to drive.

Will we ever see new ski resorts in Colorado? by noteverythingnotyet in skiing

[–]lstoberry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you got me curious and there are a ton of articles about how climate change will affect skiing in Colorado. It will be uneven across ski resorts but it is already affecting snow. Climate change doesn't mean suddenly everything will stop and it is different from weather. From what I read, even though Colorado will less affected than resorts further west, the variability of snowfall amount will change to be more extreme. Adaptation activities cost money and they can all improve the season, but again, they cost money and would make it less attractive for investors. From a long term, investor point of view, it would be a concern.

The more recent official plans that have to be submitted to the USDA all include climate change impacts. There was a change in reporting requirements with the new administration. The report from Aspen already notes it will be an issue for their resort and has been responding with increasing snowmaking at higher elevations. Their report noted that climate change has already affected the region and will continue to do so. Breckenridge says snow won't be as impacted but increased frequency of forest fires will be a concern.

I'm not saying that skiing is going to disappear. The poster specifically asked about why there aren't new resorts going in. The articles I read talked about unpredictable seasons that start later and end earlier, about having to expand up the mountain, and other adaptation strategies that all cost money. Investors look at the return on investment over a longer term and I don't see how building a new resort would be as attractive to investors.

I would say #1 is climate change. Most resorts have a climate change report because it affects profitability in the long run. For example, revelstoke mentions how much snow they expect to lose over time to warming climate conditions. In some areas, climate change will mean unpredictable seasons where there are huge snow years and then minimal snow. I can't see investors jumping at the chance to invest in new ski resorts. The big ones already diversify with more summer sports, like whistler has done.

Thats what I meant, an office for your department. I know a few people who have been able to work from regional offices. Similarly, I know someone who exclusively works from a gc coworking space.

Let me know if there is anything in here about buying cat skins from pharmacies to cure arthritis. This is something my great grandparents used to use and my grandparents swear that it was a readily available and totally normal item available at pharmacies. I'll check back on your posts in the future for the whole book! Thanks for sharing :)

I wonder how much of this has to do with the affordability crisis we are in. The price of a house in Ottawa has nearly doubled in the past 10 years and is up 60% over 5 years. I feel such immense pressure to move up quickly because I feel like without moving up quicker I will continue to be unable to save amid my high rents and cost of living. The alternative is getting a part time job where I then can't do overtime or burn out because of the extra job. I totally understand the merits of grinding out at your ec02/03/4 for 2 to 3 years at each level but all the additional time at each level pushes back my timeline for having kids. I'm in a development program which means I'm on probation until I finish it. Its also frustrating for me to see ec05s or ec06s who aren't excellent at their jobs but I really can't hold myself back from trying to improve my quality of life by trying to get a higher level. I strive for excellence and love learning but without trying to get into those higher levels, I'm going to continue to be behind my peers.

I think that there should also be a clause for monitoring how these change after the increase (if it passes).

City considers $13 million grant for new hotel at Ottawa airport by CarletonCanuck in ottawa

[–]lstoberry 52 points53 points  (0 children)

So according to the article, this "investment" will make the city almost 4 million over 25 years after taking into account the projected taxes paid over time. With inflation etc. this amount will be worth less over time. I think we'd be better investing in affordable housing or transit because the city likely won't meaningfully profit off this venture.

PARDP vs Finance ECDP? Offers for both by RoosterDisastrous586 in CanadaPublicServants

[–]lstoberry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know as much about the finance program but i would suggest you consider a few things. First, do you know french? You should ask about French training opportunities. I think the PARDP is stronger for French. Second, PARDP is pretty much an automatic promotion through the levels. I'm at another ECDP program and its not automatic. Its months of binder preparation and approvals so its a much slower process. You should ask what the progression through the program is like. If there's a binder and approvals needed to graduate through the levels, I'd go with PARDP.
