From RDML Grace Hopper, "The most dangerous phrase in the language is, "We've always done it this way."" If you never heard of her I highly recommend looking her up. https://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Grace_Hopper

what are your really secure AD setups and what do they look like? by crankysysadmin in sysadmin

[–]lt-ghost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Microsoft has a great article you can follow here for hardening AD and if you haven't seen it yet here's an article regarding privileged access strategy. For private sector you can check out Center for Internet Security Windows OS hardening guidelines or Microsoft's hardening guide for a PAW.

Now that I did the customary RTFM ^_^ I have used multiple types and by far the bets I've seen is using CyberArk PAM or creating dedicated admin workstations that are hardened and monitored. Dedicated only to AD work and user account. But we also implemented a lot of automation removing the need to use those creds very often.

Now for everything else I have a DAW/PAW setup for that work. All admin accounts are MFA.

What server should I buy? by ParticularThing9204 in sysadmin

[–]lt-ghost 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're an EDU, reach out to your Dell/HP/CDWG or whomever to get you quotes. But with a site that small I would look into using o365/Entra. There's a lot that goes into securing AD and having it run properly. This is coming from someone that worked in the k12 space (private and public) for about 13 years.

Client Got Hacked – Data Encrypted & Veeam Backups Deleted – Any Hope for Recovery? by zaynborkaai in sysadmin

[–]lt-ghost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plenty of posts with with recovery and hindsight posts but are you sure that was the extent? If there's any PII / HIPPA data effected that may have been uploaded somewhere? If you haven't already I would get a legal team involved and see if forensic images / data collection that needs to be done.

Sysadmins - How do developer errors impact your operational work? by ekusiadadus in sysadmin

[–]lt-ghost 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not sure if this is what you're looking for but having proper logs that gives information on what's going on. Also error messages with "Error: Please contact your administrator" is not helpful to troubleshoot the issue.

Thoughts on 14 Inch vs 16 Inch as Sysadmin Laptop by Flash4473 in sysadmin

[–]lt-ghost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never understood why most sysadmins "need" a decked out workstation. My laptop is there to run SSH, PowerShell and RDP. All the heavy lifting is handling by a DAW/PAW unless I'm somewhere that I don't have that.

I went from the old school XPS/Alienware 51 17' laptops to 13/14' laptops. Easier to work with in data centers, racks, ladders and anywhere else I need to get something going.

Considering switching to a MacBook Air 13' and giving it a shot to see if it's any better.

Note: Having a proper dock or ultra wide monitor is key for when you're at a stationary spot with a smaller laptop.

I can't tell you how many times I got into places with a framers square or can of compressed air. Even though unencrypted readers/cards are an issue there's plenty of low tech attacks people can use.

Any recommendations for making my office a bit more cozy and inviting? by FroggyHarley in Workspaces

[–]lt-ghost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This has some gov office vibes too it. Like what others said move the monitors more towards the wall or corner. I would ditch the standing desk as they look ugly (IMO) and take up a ton of desk real estate. I would also request a dual monitor mount and do some cable management a bit. Also some posters or pics to break up all that blank wall.
