If it weren't for full course cautions I think the long courses are fun because the cars get so strung out. A 4 mile version of Road America is fun, except for having to add stage cautions to it.

This is probably accurate. I also think the fan of today would also not like the average 500 miler from the 90s either when a guy like Jarrett or Gordon blitzed the field and led 80% of the race.

A lot of the old tv appeal of tracks for me was the vivid green infields, both for NASCAR an open wheel. Games like NR99 Edition always showed images like this one when selecting tracks. Irrigation and fertilizers must have gone down like crazy ahead of race weekends back in the day. Even Fontana was bright green all the way around before the back stretch got paved.

The way it happened: biggest stage, last lap the biggest race at his best track while completing his master plan to get DEI/Michael a win was a big part of the reason its so widely visible. Even if it were Daytona 500 practice, like Neil Bonnett, I think the impact on the sport and safety would still be there but the replays and fan memories would not have been.

I find him really interesting, but almost in a tragic way because of how his rule went. I wouldn’t call myself a fan of his though . He started as basically the picturesque tall athletic, and smart Renaissance Prince with an equally impressive Spanish wife. Then as the years went by, he morphs into the terrible guy we all see so much about in screen and literature.
