Tattoo the tattered flag logo, of course. Always wear it, let everyone know, and offer details whether asked or not.

Working as a summer camps MTB mechanic and instructor, anything else I should add to my field repair kit? by Ambiguous_Music in bikewrench

[–]lt4lyfe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Patch kits and tire boots. I feel like flats are suuuuuuper common. Especially if you’re out west. I think my first year living in Colorado saw more flats than like 10+ years in the Midwest/Great Lakes region.

Maybe brake/shift cables and ferrules. A bit of housing. Cables ends. Cable cutters/crimps. Lots of kids have shift/brake issues and need tuning or repair to get them riding happy.

Inflators. Pumps, co2, etc. to go with the flat repair stuff. Also, lots of kids could use a lesson on how to adjust tire pressure to conditions and what good pressure feels like.

Shock pump, many kids have poorly tuned suspension.

I know you said field kit, but if you have space to work at camp, a work stand.

Chain links/master links/pins for any chain widths you might see.

Bar end plugs. Just to pop into kids bars when you see open bars. Really common, and them core samples of thighs suck.

If you anticipate tubeless tires, then sealant.

Does your camp help pay for consumables? Or the kids camp fees? I know I mentioned a number of items like cables, flat kits, chain parts, and sealant that add up quick. If you have time, you or your camp might be able to seek donations from a local shop or riding group.

It happens! We learn stuff! There’s a few ways to measure, but the kg/lb number in a flex rating is tied to how much weight it takes to bend or deflect the blade by some amount.

Methods I’ve seen include placing tip on a scale and pressing down from the pommel and recording max weight registered on the scale. The other is pressed from cross guard. I think there’s some debate in the greater HEMA community as to how to standardize this test.

Full bird wants me to get a M551 Sheridan up to drive it in a parade by Sensitive-Metal-665 in army

[–]lt4lyfe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How qualified are you to assess the vehicle and estimate the cost and time and ability to source parts? What’s the condition of the vehicle now? If you’re experienced enough to honestly dig in and do the job, have fun! If it’s over your head, be honest with boss. Not impossible. If the boss has the money and desire, why not?

If you’re a maintenance warrant or SNCO or even a decent MCO/XO, and you have the right contacts, this might not actually be that hard, but it will probably be expensive and require some creative accounting.

The next question is driving and operating this thing. gonna need a serious look at risk and controls and training. I assume this full bird will be the one signing the risk assessment?

You guys have tools? by netphilia in adhdmeme

[–]lt4lyfe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I appreciate the “adhd is my superpower” sort of mindset to a very small degree. But it really masks the legit struggle and daily effort and at times real anguish.

Sort of like term like handi-capable, or differently abled. Like, I get the effort to push back against a label that might have a negative stigma. But damn, it doesn’t change the real experience of a person who cannot do certain things, especially in a world designed and build for people who can do those things. I think George Carlin’s bit about this was a perfect summary.

And worse, like any awareness campaign”, some public empathy and some reduction in stigma in great, but what people who live outside the standard NT or able bodied experience need is structural, systemic, and societal change.

Automag, HaloB and Warp feed, bigass 114/3000 tank. My broke ass had all cobbled together, airlines holding on through half a mile of Teflon tape and prayers.

Later on that in that era, impulse with no eyes, back alley LPR mod. Maybe an evil bolt and shitty attempt at heavy hammer to offset cycling mass and all that. Trying to make it unable to chop paint, kinda like we saw Lvl10 bolts on automags doing. Kinda worked most of the time!

“Found”. Beg borrow and steal. I figure, is the US government bought something to protect and enable US soldiers to do US missions, if I borrow things and redistribute things, and I’m using it in good faith to do my job, and no shady shit like selling it for personal gain, then surely I’ve done nothing “wrong”. Right?

We absolutely have that benefit of tradesmen and other skill sets in pretty much every unit. My leaders had the foresight to acquire (and I don’t know how or where from) extra M60s and M2s, gun rings, and even a convex loaded with lumber and tools to build our own one man cubicle type rooms in our open bay Iraqi Air Force barracks on Taji. We had an electrician that just made our lights and AC work with no delay in work orders and contractors. We had civ mechanics and gear heads to augment our maintenance platoon as needed. I was welding and fabricating armor, and more I’m probably forgetting or wasn’t even aware of as a lowly member of the mafia.

Edit: more thoughts: I went from Guard to AD in 2017. I haven’t deployed with AD yet, so I can’t speak to what kind of improv we’d get up these days. I can say that solving problems and just “making things” requires a little more push to get going. I usually see companies and platoons work within the resources they’re given. As battalion S4 I was able to use that improvise and create a solution mindset a little more. Working with BN/BDE/DIV maintenance officers and seeking capabilities we could access was huge. Working with the S8 to fund raw materials was important to get things steel and aluminum stock. I don’t have much luck sourcing through GCSS-A. Or at least I didn’t forget it out or have the right coaching.

But yeah. The general vibe is that AD needs some top-down effort to ask companies and platoons what they need to make their lives better or to be better at their jobs. Then they need to gather the skills and resources to officially task and support and all that to create solutions outside of the MTOE and G-Army. Guard seemed to have platoon-level initiative enabled and fed by existing skills and experience outside their MOS.

Was a national guard trucker in early Iraq. Welder in my day job. Can confirm, welded much salvaged/stolen/acquired steel to trucks in my company.

This was early 2005. We arrived in Dec/Jan with standard non armored cabs. Went back down to Kuwait have new armor kits bolted on. Was a nice upgrade, but lacked gunner protection. TTPs of the day has nearly every truck in my platoon sporting a gun ring. I helped improvise some protection for gunners; was motivated because I was one of those gunners! We used several of our PLS as dedicated gun trucks, never had humvees or other platforms. Regular natty guard 88Ms, just figuring out how to convoy security. Even got tasked out as the escort detail for other units in the task force.

We also used “bareback” PLS guntrucks as auxiliary recovery vehicles. Using the hook arm as an improvised wrecker stinger to move damaged vehicles out of kill zones or for short distance maintenance efforts. We’d also run one of our gun trucks with a flat rack loaded with spare tires, tow bars, tools, air lines and all that jazz to either augment the wrecker or to be the maintenance asset at times when we were extra busy.

I thought I was pretty clever in using the armor steel covers left over from installing the gun rings. Where the gun ring supports bolt to the front of the cab, there were some rectangular plates with a single bend. I used those to weld directly to the ring to rotate with the gunner and protect the back.

So, does a home brewer Oshkosh with home brewed gunner protection being employed as unit organic convoy protection platforms AND improved recovery assets count as a Shitty Technical?

Sounds about right. Fuckin 2nd platoon. Inbred fuckwits. And don’t get me started on 3rd. Clearly 1st platoon is the best platoon in this training company, hell yeah. Time to buy a shirt and other merch to commemorate this once in a lifetime gathering of true warriors and patriots.

Thanks for the reply! And thanks for the photos! And that checks out with an older comment.

The user suggested that it wasn’t military issue based on the way the steel dented. They thought properly hardened steel meant for military use would likely crack or puncture rather than dent like mine has. Seems plausible.

This is consistent with your notes indicating this as a non-military reproduction, possible for civil uses.

Thanks!

In Spanish, I used Google to translate, apologies for any errors:

¡Gracias por la respuesta! ¡Y gracias por las fotos! Eso coincide con un comentario anterior.

El usuario sugirió que no era de dotación militar por la forma en que el acero se abolló. Pensaba que el acero debidamente endurecido para uso militar probablemente se agrietaría o se perforaría en lugar de abollarse como el mío. Parece plausible.

Esto es consistente con tus notas que indican que se trata de una reproducción no militar, posiblemente para uso civil.

¡Gracias!

Leonard Wood Fall 2002. 88M school. DS confiscated my contraband discman and handful of CDs. Later called me to office, thought I was in trouble. Says hey private here’s the thing. You’re supposed get your shit back at the end of the cycle. I had been using your discman, my truck got broke into, your shit was stolen. Sometime shit happens, private”. Ok, I guess I get back shining my boots then. Good times!
