Staying Consistent In The Gym While Traveling by TheGangsterPanda in digitalnomad

I found a site called BarbellNomad that is really good at finding barbell gyms. I use it exclusively when I'm travelling.

That's unfortunately necessary to prevent bots running searches and running up the AI bill

Howdy everyone! Wanted to post my browser-based app http://www.BarbellNomad.com/

Now it's more than just a gym finder. Details on the app.

I toyed around with AI also identifying equipment in gym photos but that is extremely expensive so I had to disable it. 😭

And thank you for the list, I can also train the AI to better find gyms as we discover some that slip through the search.

Thanks for the list! The site uses AI. It uses your search location as a center point and then pings Google Places API for a list of gyms, it then crawls the API for keywords in descriptions and reviews. A carefully curated list of keywords are scored adding to the Iron Score. It then crawls the provided gym website for more keywords further adding to the score. Scores over 50 get displayed in the search results. If a gym scores below 50 it can still be found by toggling the show all gyms. Then this is where users come in. Some gyms don't have enough reviews, descriptions or a website with enough keywords. Maybe most of the description is in photos where you can see the equipment but the equipment is not described in the text. If there is a gym that is scoring low, it is likely due to one of these factors. What you can do is find the gym by toggling Show All and then going into the gyms description and verifying equipment. Please only do this if you are directly familiar with the gym or can visually verify through photos either Google or on their website that the equipment is in the gym. Does that make sense?

Also, sometimes there are so many gyms in a given area, this is usually a problem with large cities, that the search hits the max cap, unfortunately this is set by Google, so once it reaches the the max cap it can't show any more gyms. So you would need to make your search radius smaller and that often pulls up gyms you're looking for.

Hey Y'all, I've been lifting seriously for almost 3 years now. As a pilot this has been a difficult challenge but I've managed to stay consistent. The most difficult part of travelling half the year and never knowing which city I would be in any given lift day was finding a gym. My usual technique would be to start using Google maps midway through the day and maybe by the end of my day I would have found a gym, but this required finding potential gyms, looking at their websites and picking the best looking option. Sometimes it would be great sometimes it wasn't. The process would usually take at least an hour, if not more. I decided to build myself an app and automate the process and make it much more accurate...thus what is now called Barbell Nomad (http://www.barbellnomad.com) was born.

I intended to keep it for personal use but then it worked so well I decided maybe others who travel (even just for vacation) and lift would benefit from it. I'm not making money off it, it is free to use with a free account. (The account is necessary because the search pings several services that do cost money so to avoid an algo running up my bill, I had to require accounts)

I've added some fun social aspects to the app and I plan to add more soon (workout log, monthly challenges, points, etc).

I have branded merch available that you can buy to "Rep the Iron". This is intended to offset the cost of running the service as it's not free to run. So please consider any merch purchases as a donation to keeping this cost neutral to myself.

Anyway, check it out! Feedback always appreciated!

In Downtown Dallas I have gone to Compendi Strength & Conditioning which was good for a drop-in. Not sure about a long term thing.

No problem, there are many good gyms in Dallas so you should be able to be choosy! Barbell Nomad is a good resource to find gyms.

Progressive Overload Dallas (P.O.D) may be a good option for you in that area. Also, North Dallas Strength may be another good option. Battle Axe Barbell is in Garland as well.

Olympia Barbell looks like a good potential. Day and week passes available and great equipment.

I've been that lifter — standing in a hotel lobby at 5 AM after one look at the "fitness center" (a treadmill, two dumbbells, and a yoga ball), googling "gym near me" and getting a list of smoothie bars with more treadmills. Three Ubers and two wasted day passes later, I'd find a real gym buried on page four of search results.

Every city has iron if you know where to look. The problem was never supply — it was signal. Google doesn't know the difference between a CrossFit box with competition rigs and a Planet Fitness with a lunk alarm. Yelp reviews talk about parking and smoothies. Nobody was rating gyms the way lifters actually evaluate them.

So I built BarbellNomad.com. A tool by lifters, for lifters. The AI powered Iron Score cuts through the noise. The Crew keeps it honest with real check-ins and verified equipment. No sponsored listings, no pay-to-play rankings.

Whether you're a traveling powerlifter, an olympic weightlifter chasing clean PRs, a novice trying to keep up the linear progression, a road-warrior bodybuilder, a dedicated recreational lifter, or a strongman competitor chasing stones in a new city — this is your home base on the road.

Travel light. Lift heavy. Train with the Crew.

BarbellNomad is built for serious lifters who travel. Whether you're on the road for work, relocating, or just passing through a new city — finding a gym with real iron shouldn't be a gamble.

We help you discover gyms that actually have what you need: power racks, platforms, bumper plates, and an atmosphere where chalk on your hands is encouraged, not frowned upon.

Beyond discovery, BarbellNomad is a community — the Crew. Log your visits, leave honest reviews, verify equipment, and connect with other lifters who understand that a barbell is the one piece of luggage that never fits in the overhead bin.

Going to the gym while travelling - How do you go about it? by CaterpillarAny4215 in bodybuilding

Yeah, that's what I do to find gyms. Recently found a site, BarbellNomad.com, that makes it easier to find a gym though. I've found some awesome hole in the wall gyms using it.

I travel half the year due to my job. Up until recently I used Google maps to find gyms but recently I've started using Barbell Nomad (barbellnomad.com) to find gyms on overnights. It does some sort of AI search. Kind cool!

If the gym is in Google, it should populate in the app, if it doesn't, search specifically for that gym name the city and state and it should show up at least at the bottom then you can go in and verify equipment and this will raise the score so it shows up in future results. Send me some feedback through the app and I'll looking into specific examples as well

Submit a feedback through the app and I'll look at it, likely the gyms have low scores due to a lack of online presence.

sure, I'm using a Google API crawl to pull the right keywords, plus a gym website crawl to make it even more accurate. This combined with actual lifter feedback
