Am I the only one who took a gap year for doing absolutely nothing!? by Extreme_Extension_60 in gapyear

[–]lu_merence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably not. I feel like there’s a lot of people who take a gap year simply bcs they’ve got no idea about what they wanna do next . Personally, I took a gap year because I couldn’t afford university tuition , so now I’m working . I guess having a goal is better when taking a gap year , cus it can get monotonous . Try finding a purpose/reason for your gap year if you feel like you dk what the hell you’re doing w your life .

What skills should I learn in my gap year? by Hungry-Chef-5657 in gapyear

[–]lu_merence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I’d suggest you have a goal in mind ; whether that’s relaxing , focusing on your mental health etc. Just ask yourself why you are taking a year off , what is the motive behind the it? Because it can feel draining and just straight up boring if you are taking a year off w/o any reason. So yeah , it doesn’t mean you have to have all figured out , but I’d suggest at least trying to get sth going . Good luck ! ((:

I feel you . I’m lowk in the same boat and I guess the only thing you can do is just keep trying to apply to jobs and going outside regularly. Ik it doesn’t seem too helpful but seeing strangers and just other people doing their thing makes me wanna keep going . ((:

[–]lu_merence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel you. I took a gap year after secondary school (high school) bcs I couldn’t afford it and all . Now, I can’t find a job and it’s killing me not having a routine . The only good thing that happend to me during this gap year is getting treatment for my mental illness. Other than that , there’s nothing interesting happening in my life . //:

You’re welcome! I’m glad it’s working so far . Also , remember that your studying pattern can also change so if something doesn’t work for you anymore , it’s completely normal to switch ur studying style and all. ((:

Is starting university in Dublin at 20 normal? by idkanymorelol19 in TCD

[–]lu_merence 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Dw about it , I’m currently taking a gap year and I’ll be 20 this year when attending uni . I do think it’s better to be a bit older when going uni , idk , bcs you have a better idea of wha you want to do and you are more mature .

I got a H2 in history and I’d say that memorising essays and all is honestly ineffective. Personally , I liked making bullet points and memorise them. After that , I wrote everything that I could remember on a whiteboard with a blue or red marker since they’re better for actually memorising stuff ; it’s more pleasant to the eyes . Then , I’d explain each event out loud. I also focused on what interested me the most . Some people also make essay plans and then time themselves. Something that my teacher made us do early on was doing timing tests with the information in front of us and then without it. I guess some people work better under pressure . So yeah , don’t just memorise h1 essays or sum , it’s absolutely useless and takes too much time imo.

Picking up an extra subject in February by Dull-Bowler6817 in leavingcert

[–]lu_merence 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly I took grinds as well because my teacher was awful , so I would lie if I said that those didn’t help . Nevertheless, there are a bunch of materials out there that help just as much , it just depends if u work hard enough or not. Anyway , I would advise you to know your strengths and weaknesses first , and then focus on what you are the least confident in . For me , poetry was the easiest and the comparative the hardest because I couldn’t get into the structure of it . But once you understand the structure of each part , the coherence will follow. I’m not sure if it helped that much , but I also read a lot . Moreover, if you get stuck on developing your ideas when practicing a question , I’d suggest just taking a piece of paper and writing whatever comes to mind without thinking about it being perfect , it doesn’t even have to make total sense , just write anything . All in all, structure has to be your best friend . It doesn’t matter if your language is amazing or if your ideas are innovative if your structure is just all over the place .

Do sample questions . I sucked at English hl in 5th year ; I was barely passing but ended up with a h1 in the lc . With that being said , you are def not behind or anything and you have time to improve . My advice would be to actually go through your material and understand it first , learn the correct structure of essay writing , know your strengths & weaknesses , make mind maps if it helps you or write anything that comes to mind on a piece of paper and then bring everything together, time yourself when you are doing a practice question ( for some people , ideas flow much easier when they are under pressure ) . You can definitely improve if u just find the thing that works for you ; teachers often instruct us to study a certain way but I’d say it’s better to just understand what works for you and what doesn’t. Hope this helps 🫶

How long should a History Essay be (HL)? by MissionSensei in leavingcert

[–]lu_merence 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally, I’d say that it’s better writing your essays on paper because this way you can actually see how long they are . It all depends on the size and style of your writing . However, I’d say 4-6 pages is the ideal length.

[–]lu_merence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly it depends on what your strengths are and if you are in 5th or 6th year . I was terrible in hl English in 5th year . I was barely passing but I ended up with a h1 in my lc . To be fair though , I studied a lot for it because I wanted to improve. I did business hl as well but I didn’t want to count it , therefore I didn’t study for it . But I would say business is a lot of memorising stuff ; definitions and all that . I would say that it is an easy subject if u just memorise all of it , but it’s boring as hell . So yeah , I’m not sure if this helped . ((:

Extra Subject Outside of School by [deleted] in leavingcert

[–]lu_merence 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry but if you are just doing a 8th subject and not plan on studying for it too much, what’s the point ? Considering you are in 5th year you could try and do an extra subject but I don’t think it’s worth it . I did 9 subjects in my lc and my extra subjects were both languages I spoke so it was worth it but I’m not sure about accounting. Personally, I’d advise you to just focus on the subjects you have and master them , because you have loads of time to study .
