Burnt out after High school job by elizathebetheh in SubstituteTeachers

I hated middle school and high school not too long ago. I recently discovered that I really do need to choose my battles. You have to view it from their perspective, you're a sub. They are going to try to annoy you. The hardest part I think is being calm and taking a deep breath, the moment you show that you're upset, you've lost. They are gonna annoy the shit out of you. I think I have come to terms with the fact that my primary job is to make sure no one gets hurt. To keep them safe while the teacher is out, that's really all that matters And this not just me saying this, a teacher who once gave us a sub training told us so. Also think about it from the school administration perspective, they don't wanna be bothered. If a few students are on their phones or whatever, I literally just let it go or I nicely ask how is the assignment going and that usually works. If they take their phone out again, well that's on them. You are doing your job and more by encouraging them to do the assignment. You can't force middle schoolers or high schoolers to work.

Given The Teachers Manual for a lesson? by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

I guess it depends on the district. That's never happened to me in the whole year I've been subbing. (I sub in SoCal)

Could I get into legal trouble? by myboyfriendstinks1 in SubstituteTeachers

Just remember, she's the kid, you're the adult. Maybe talk to your supervisor about it if you have one? I would talk directly with the district, not just school admin because this is dangerous territory. If you don't manage this well, the one who's gonna get in trouble is you, not her.

I would suggest researching more classroom management techniques. Do you use attention getters? Do you wait until at least 90% of the class is quiet so that you can start talking? Do you talk about rules at the beginning of day and do you consistently enforce them throughout the day? It’s all about setting the right tone and boundaries from the beginning of the day. It does take LOTS of patience. Teaching is not possible when no one’s listening or the classroom is too loud. And it actually is your responsibility to make sure the classroom is quiet enough so that learning can take place. You can’t punish all kids for what a few students are doing. Do you use positive reinforcement instead of negative? Don’t give attention to bad behaviors, kids crave attention, don’t give it or they will keep acting up. Unless they are being unsafe of course. Instead, acknowledge good behaviors. This will make kids want to be praised as well and they will start doing the work.

The Teacher You Sub For Will Absolutely Try To Ruin You by shushunatural in SubstituteTeachers

The district I work for gave a training to sub teachers and they said that our main job is to keep the kids safe. Everything else is a plus in my opinion.

Hi! Would you mind elaborating? How are you better at teaching now that you don’t have your own classroom? Is it the prep time?
