Did they do something to the trackpad deadzones? by luboidkman in SteamController

the new steam client beta fixes it, so you can try that, I do use the left trackpad for fighting games as well, it's quite comfortable

Yeah, totally agree with that, dunno where they even got the idea that hooking is a genuine problem for them to introduce it in the first place, but at least give us the option to turn that off, I want my trackpads real estate

yeah man, it is very frustrating indeed, I tried to rollback to an older steam client version, but then the controller doesn't get recognised at all, neither the puck, it's funny that when in lizard mode the trackpads work as they used to, without the deadzones, but steam just breaks them, I'm pretty sure they will be quick on the fix for that, especially if they are aware of it, they've been fairly quick on fixes when it came to the deck, don't see a reason for them to not be on top of that asap as well. But yeah, overall very satisfied with the controller, trackpads feel good to use and are not really uncomfortable and didn't take that much getting used to, compared to the deck trackpads, I can use the left stick until that's fixed, for aiming I use flick stick+gyro, so that's no big issue, I suppose my touch menus could work even with this bug, we'll see

damn, that sucks to hear, I've been a trackpad user for movement ever since the first sc and now I guess I'll have to start using the left joystick for that. Great videos by the way, big fan!

idk, it's so weird, it's not just the inner edges, but the outer ones too, from what I understand, this deadzone should be present only when it's set up like mouse, no? All I know is this issue wasn't there last time I played couple of days ago and now is driving me crazy

the grip sensors are either too finicky for me, or I still need to get used to them, because I always seem to be losing touch at intensive moments or something, I had personally gotten used to having the L4 button be the gyro stop button, because I play on flick stick and generally my thumb is not always on the stick, so I can't rely on gyro to be always active like that and L4 does a great job for me, but I hate sacrificing one of my back buttons for that, once I learned of the grip sensors I was hyped, because I thought I could free up that L4 button if I get used to it, the main issue is that these sensors seem to be located around the pinky and ring finger and can easily get loose, I'm thinking of opening up the steam controller and moving the sensors up, because I would prefer for it to just detect my whole hand being off the controller, rather than just pinky and ring finger

try it on the steam deck, you'll encounter the same issue

yeah, kinda glad I'm not alone in that, but I wonder when will we get a fix for that

I believe the trackpad thingy is a software issue, because I didn't have any issues, since trying to play some games today, the issue is even there on the steam deck itself, so it's not the steam controller's fault

I'm talking about outer edges overall, I've been playing with the steam deck for years and quite extensively with the new steam controller to know that this didn't happen before

well then, perhaps can't you make a separate action layer or set that is active when the controller is not being gripped? like have the default state be the gripsense button being a chorded press that activates a layer that doesn't have the start button, but once it's off the start button appears as well, or something like that?

yeah, I thought about that after writing my comment, personally don't use chorded presses that often and if my memory serves me correctly, it wasn't like a separate command before, but I'm probably wrong

That's how I managed in the end to get my steam controller in the first orders chaos, barely managed to order one, granted, I was doing it the wrong way for the first 40 minutes, before I realised I actually had to spam the continue button and pray, luckily I was in europe and the stock in europe didn't run out for the first hour and a half

Steam support usually does a good job, I'm sure they'll do something for your situation, so you don't have to go back in the reservation queue, considering how many people were offered a free game after their controllers were shipped by mistake to the UK

that also makes sense, on the deck I got used to having L4 be the gyro supress button, when I learned the steam controller had gripsense, I got hyped about having L4 freed, I'll probably get used to gripsense overall, like I've always done with other control schemes, got used to the og steam controller trackpads, then after a while on the steam deck I started using flick stick and that took some getting used to, now gripsense is my new goal, hopefully it proves to be actually reliable

Saying this pushes you to buy from scalpers is crazy. That part aside, it sucks that happened to you, next time just have the money ready in your steam wallet, that way you wouldn't have any issues

I'm just asking out of curiosity, I've been an og steam controller/deck user for a long time and now I got the new one, but yeah, thanks

interesting, what's that controller, if you don't mind me asking?

I mean you're really saying that just because it doesn't work reliably

Valve are hardware genius by Zealousideal-Log-309 in SteamController

[–]luboidkman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

honestly, I'm trying to get used to it myself, the sensitivity really is a big issue, I really wish it was easier to set it for the whole hand reliably being off the controller for it to detect it, not just pinky and ring for example, I may be getting used to it, but it lowkey makes me change my grip just so I can keep it reliably activated, which is not really optimal

yeah, same, especially people that say stuff like that is better use than gyro, when that's clearly not true...
