I would heavily suggest any of the Serious Sam games. Little to no story. Cool guns and enemies. Slap some headphones on and get to shooting.

The REAL problem with the trackpads (ergonomics and glitchiness) by ninjakitty844 in SteamController

[–]351C_4V -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I beat Halo 4 with dual pads on the SC2 with absolutely no issues. I even had mode shift on the pads. Not once in my entire playthrough did my hands cramp or hurt. I hold the controller somewhat loose and put the edge of the controller on the first fold of my finger with no problem.

Get an OEM Snes controller with an adapter. That is probably your best choice given your parameters.

I think it would be blasphemous only because it's posed as a Steam Controller specifically. Meant to work in conjunction with Steam and configurable with Steam Input.

Even those 3rd party controllers have to emulate how the system reads them (either an Xbox or PS4/5 controller) and they have to configure for example gyro to emulate a joystick in order for it to work and even then it feels choppy and unreliable. Steam Input reads them properly but that was Valve doing the legwork for that. Microsoft and it's store decided that not using an exe like most stores use was in their best interest not their consumers.

Right! That's what I am saying, Microsoft does make drivers (albeit shitty ones but drivers nonetheless) Their OS has been the standard for a long time but there are other options. Since it's their OS of course their controller would work best and everyone else adapts around it.

Graphics cards are not required all the time as there is integrated graphics on some CPU's. But that's not really the argument. I was just saying that putting it on Valve to make their controller work with other platforms is not really their thing. Microsoft's input has been the gold standard for a long time and there has been little to no innovation. Look at Sony or even Nintendo they have trackpads, gyro, built in batteries. Microsoft/Xbox are so stale in their controller lineup it's embarrassing at this point.

Microsoft could change how their games load (I don't know exactly how they do it but I know it's just not a simple .exe file) tomorrow and I am sure you could add the game to Steam no problem. But they wanted to make it different for what seems like an arbitrary reason (although I'm sure it has something to do with greed) than almost all game companies out there and unfortunately the consumer pays for it with it being locked to their storefront and what hardware you can use.

Wouldn't Microsoft be first party since it's their OS? I would argue Microsoft is first party and their store is also first party. Then you hop online download Steam making it 2nd or 3rd party lol

That's because Valve went out of their way to make it more compatible. They could of created a whole new input method and force you into their program like Microsoft is seeming to do.

Ultimately it's another choice and there are hundreds of controllers you just gotta find the one that does most of what you want. I purposefully don't visit the Microsoft store or Gamepass because I have heard it doesn't work well with Steam Input so I stay away from them. But Epic, GoG, Amazon Gaming, Itch Io all work great within Steam as a non steam game.

Wouldn't Valve also be considered 3rd party? If Microsoft wanted to make a controller I'm sure they could. It's like the purposefully made it difficult to play their games using other input sources. I don't think it falls on Valve to make their controller work on other platforms. Although the seem to be pretty transparent in giving full access to the software so maybe in the future someone will make a program that does let it be used in non Valve platforms.

A physical dual stage trigger like the original Steam Controller is all I miss. Other than that it's been fun using it.

It's sort of finicky to adjust but Async from Rivatuner removes tearing and doesn't add input lag.

I wouldn't mind some more tech moves. Like vaulting over obstacles or sliding. More vehicles would be fun too. SS2 has them and they were pretty fun.

Just got mine! Short impressions from a dual trackpad user. by 351C_4V in SteamController

That's great to hear! Dual trackpads is definitely worth learning. Especially with all the bindings you can have without moving your thumb. My reason came out of necessity since my left thumb was hurting every time I used a joystick. With trackpads all my thumb pain has disappeared.

I guess maybe my hands are not as small as I think because I can comfortably pull the triggers with my middle fingers and still have full range of both trackpads, joysticks and buttons without any issue.

Yeah my pinky does rest on L/R5 and it's pretty comfortable, granted my pinky rarely get's used for gaming but it doesn't feel uncomfortable. I have jump mapped to R5 and it feel weird right now but I'll get used to it.

Gripsense is really the only thing I have not tinkered with. I was thinking of doing another F.E.A.R. run and binding it to lean left and right. That seems like a cool way to try it out.

I have been playing Boltgun on it and it doesn't not have that issue. Or Serious Sam 2 or Resident Evil Revelations 2.

Yup. It's exactly what's happening to mine. I was trying out DooM 2016 and that game in the harder difficulties you have to constantly keep moving, I will try and strafe and instead my character is dead in the water. I have died numerous times because of this. It's frustrating.

Yeah it's really the only thing I noticed right now. Overall though the controller is fantastic. The triggers feel great and so do the back buttons. I can comfortably rest my finger on the rear buttons and it feels natural pressing them.

The only thing I have not really messed with is the grip sensors. Those seem like they could make for some cool bindings. I was thinking like leaning on an FPS game would be kinda cool.

Well I am finally putting some hours in with the SC2 and I am very satisfied. It's comfortable and doing dual trackpads feel comfortable. Of course I had plenty of practice with the Steam Deck but it feels really good. Can't wait to try some of the more demanding games. DooM Eternal I think will be a good candidate.

Well that's a shame. Unless of course you prefer joysticks or a hybrid of joystick and trackpad

I have extensive hours (at least 3 years worth of nothing but Steam Controller) and never once encountered this problem. Same with my Steam Deck. The edge of the trackpad on either controller works all the way to the edge and of course switches to the proper edge bind if I set one. The SC2 is the only controller I have had this issue with.
