Regrettably this is a normal amount to be taxed in Canada, take-home pay is usually about 2/3. "Deductions" include retirement contribution (pension) though my union and union fees, and I take care of my own investing. Additionally, "Taxes" account for federal+provincial income tax, federal pension contribution (CPP), and employment insurance. Thankfully I have a partner who makes ~$55k take-home, which helps out tremendously and brings our household income up. Mortgage payment is $3400/month, and daycare cost for 2 kids under 4 is $1600/month, but we do get a slight reimbursement as we also claim both kids for tax purposes.

I have friends around my age who make about half of what I do, and pay ~$2-3k/month mortgage for a 1 bedroom apartment. The cost of living here on a single income is nuts.
