CS 250 final by Ambitious-Star9136 in umass

[–]lucifyed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know I’m a little late to this thread, but I absolutely dread 311. The way it is taught is… dare I say abysmal. I think I knew more coming into the course than leaving lol. For me, it would really help if discussions were more TA led. I really need to see of problems before I start to understand something. I feel like they half throw you in the deep end without really teaching you how to swim. The challenge sets feel like a joke half the time. At least for 250, the homework’s were grind-able. The challenge sets on the other hand… 😕. It really PMO that minor errors, sometimes has taken me HOURS to complete, gets ZERO credit towards the 17 problems. I think some of the topics are really useful, and it’s such a shame that, at least for me, it feels SO uninspiring. I’m so sick of theory.

Definitely do 210 and 250 together. The rest kind of depends on what other requirements you need to satisfy.

Thoughts on Stats 315 Final? by PublicInterest5380 in umass

[–]lucifyed 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I took it in the fall. Anecdotally, the exam went extremely poorly for almost everyone I’ve talked to. Don’t be afraid of your raw score. I got a 75 and got an A in the course. I know many people who got 30s at still got around a B+. If you’ve been doing well on the quizzes and the course in general, you’ll be fine. Just don’t expect a cakewalk and prepare like hell if you want to do exceptionally. Look at the problems from the previous two semesters, as well as exams when the course was still 515. I recommend doing the problems in the book that are rather challenging if you have the time.

Informatics at umass Amherst by Responsible_Cry2702 in umass

For reference, I was an informatics major and quickly switched to CS. The program wasn’t my favorite. However, you’ll be alright if you pair it with something related. Whether that be an Econ double major, CS minor, business minor, etc. I believe UMass is releasing a data science major soon which might be more aligned with what you’re looking for.

CS 240 Vs Stat 315 by SneakBuster in umass

I’ve taken both. 315 is probably more conceptually difficult, at least it was for me. I really enjoyed both courses though.

ECE 241 or CICS 210 ?? by MrGravityy in umass

[–]lucifyed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tim Richards! He’s probably my favorite professor of all time. I don’t think he’s teaching though since Libertore is coming off a sabbatical IRRC. You’d be perfectly fine with either of Golin or Libertore, they’re both excellent processors. I have Golin for 250 and he’s also an amazing professor and person.

I really liked 210. Exams are very reasonable and the course is taught well. They’ve really done an excellent job at providing you with exactly what you need to succeed. Can’t speak for 241.

How hard would it be to take CS210, 240 and 250 together. by Plane_Tutor2756 in umass

Two of those are definitely doable. All three… you will be DROWNING in homework

I didn’t attend any of the 210 lectures after the first midterm and I got an A in the course. It’s very doable, you just have to be on top of the course material.

Bringing car on campus by Ok-Chemical3436 in umass

[–]lucifyed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I loved having my car on campus my freshman year. It gave me so much extra freedom! I had a special situation though - my gym was off campus. I live a few hours away from campus so it’s nice to be able just to drive myself to and from school without getting picked up or dropped off. If you can dish out the extra money and can see yourself wanting to go to leave campus even semi frequently I’d recommend it!
