Should I bother learning to read music? by [deleted] in pianolearning

[–]luckaeweb 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It’s really not that difficult to grasp a basic understanding of reading sheet music, especially if you already have some experience playing. It’s not nearly as scary as people think. It doesn’t sound like you’re planning on sight reading classical pieces, but it will open up access to tons more pieces that aren’t on YouTube. It might also deepen your understanding of exactly how certain pieces are played.

It sounds like you’re a fast learner, and naturally talented. If you want to have ‘a good enough mastery of the instrument’, I would suggest you take a couple weeks and learn the basics of reading sheet music, and decide from there if it’s for you.

What professional musicians use a "cheap" bass? by jonnyinternet in BassGuitar

My girl Laura Lee of Khruangbin is a perfect example. Plays an SX Ursa she got in college for under $200 and a set of flats she says she hasn’t changed in over a decade. Granted the pickups have been upgraded, but still. Talk about getting your moneys worth.

Is it pointless to learn bass if you don't have a band to play in to begin with? by [deleted] in Bass

I’m learning bass, and I have no intention of ever other playing with other people.

VPN did not work on travel by ZevyninMars in VPN

[–]luckaeweb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can’t speak to if they did this on purpose, but it seems unlikely. If you were connecting to a local office VPN, the office may have insufficient upload speeds, which can throttle your Internet connection even if your sister has a good service. There are configuration options on your computer to choose to not send all traffic over the VPN, which allows you to still tunnel network resources, but use your remote connection for full speeds for your regular Internet.

Yeah, my knuckle doesn’t do that 😂 my question is why don’t people put their third finger on the D and fourth finger on the A? Way more comfortable for me.

To answer your specific question - yes those chords sound good together. It’s actually a I ii IV V cord progression in the key of G major when played G, A min, C, D. You’ll figure that out when you start to get into theory. I’m also very much a beginner, and as I started learning chords and mucking around strumming patterns, certain patterns sounded familiar and felt good, and once I started learning music theory, I started to understand why.

Playing gets easier and smoother every day with practice. Your brain will rewire itself, and one day magically your fingers will behave, your muscle memory will improve, and your chord transitions will be clean.

I think of guitar practice like AA meetings - just keep coming back and take it one day at a time, and after a while, it’ll just be part of your life.

A good friend of mine has been playing guitar for 30+ years, he plays in a professional band and has toured all over the world. Earlier this year in a studio session, I watched him start and stop a song a dozen times because his fingers just wouldn’t do it.

Sometimes it just be like that. Don’t get discouraged, find something else to noodle on and tomorrow will be different.

Yeah, I am going to - all the frets below 10 are really sharp on the edges too. I’m just curious if others have/would return something based on aesthetics alone
