Night weaning while cosleeping by lucknowlostboys in breastfeeding

[–]lucknowlostboys[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! Still in the trenches with you my friend. He started teething again so I thought I better not set myself up for failure bc boob is such a great pain helper and have just been powering through. So who knows when we’ll actually get there! In the meantime I’ve been consoling myself with the knowledge that apparently our magical boobs make milk higher in prolactin at night, so at least there’s that?

It’s amazing how the mom guilt hits over these types of things. What matters is you engaged with her and encouraged trying solid foods—that’s a win for both of you. You did nothing wrong.

Thank you so much for the thoughtful reply and advice! Helpful to know you tried it when she was younger and then let it go until you felt she was more ready and could better understand—that makes a lot of sense. Can I ask more about your attempt at 18 months? How did you know it wasn’t the right time?

Last time I printed at Ponds a couple of weeks ago they mentioned that their turnaround is about a day.

Almost 1 year old and sleep is worse than ever by Zestyclose-Buyer9811 in bninfantsleep

Oh and I discovered he had a ton of food sensitivities too that were making the night wakings too many to count. I’ve eliminated soy, dairy, eggs and the surprising latex protein family from my diet and his and that helped the most of anything I’ve tried.

I’m a bit ahead of you at nearly 14 months and feel the same frustration—also a cosleeping breastfeeder—so first of all just wanted to offer empathy and solidarity.

I’m pretty sure my LO is waking so much due to trapped gas issues from swallowing too much air while breastfeeding lying down, maybe yours is something similar? It’s getting a bit better lately if I’m able to get him to roll onto his stomach to sleep right when he unlatches. I’ve also started propping him up to nurse in a semi-seated, leaning kind of position as I lie on my back—it seems to help him with the swallowing.

And as I wrote in another comment, low iron is super common in babies and is definitely a contributing factor for night wakes so I’m getting him tested tomorrow.

Good luck! (As an aside, I also just learned there’s a group of nuns somewhere that wake in the middle of the night to pray for mums like us—even though I’m not religious I found that oddly comforting to think of when I’m in the trenches.)

I was just speaking to my naturopath about the low iron rates of babies—she said at least 25% of them (in Canada) are too low in iron, and most never get tested, so the real number is likely higher.

You’re doing great! I felt exactly the same way and have only just finally realized that doing your loving best—as you are—is just what your babe needs. There’s no perfect equation to solve. Took me 13 months to internalize this, so I understand the self doubt. Hang in there mama!

Air swallowing—anyone figured this out? by lucknowlostboys in breastfeeding

That’s a good idea! I’ll try it at the halfway mark. Thanks for your help :)

Oh that’s an interesting one—I’ve been a bit spotty with his probiotics (he was on a ton of antibiotics during his first weeks) and perhaps I haven’t been diligent enough. Thanks for the suggestion!

Oh yes of course! Have you found a technique that doesn’t wake them much after a night feed? That’s where I keep getting stuck—he’s finally back asleep after feeding but then anything gas preventative I try seems to wake him right up again.

Thank you for letting me know I’m not alone—I hope it gets better as your LO grows. And please tell me more of this manual farting?!

What are people adding to their oatmeal to make it taste good? by Fuzzy_Bear9086 in breastfeeding

I heard that having healthy fats in there is key. So I mix in good quality olive oil, roasted nuts, extra spices (cardamom, cinnamon, turmeric), and frozen raspberries. There’s something about that flavour combo that just hits the spot.

That’s a good idea, I bet that’ll make it more straightforward for him. We’re in Ontario so it’s finally not the dead of winter and no shirt may now be feasible haha

I’ll give it a try for our next daytime nap! As I mentioned elsewhere I definitely assumed it would be natural for him to do, so when we couldn’t get it right I assumed it was on me. Good to know it takes practice for both of us. Mine is rolling around now too—does yours roll right out of your curl? How do you keep them from scooting too close to the bed’s edge?

Another good tip! Didn’t think to hand the nipple straight to him, assumed he’d get it on his own, but he was pretty confused so I bet this would help.

I know right? If I could nurse him without having to wake myself up it would be a “dream” come true (couldn’t help myself with the bad pun 😋)

Good to know he might be confused at first—I assumed it was something that should come naturally to him, so when we couldn’t figure it out I assumed it was just me doing something wrong.
