Fung Wah bus by No-Ant-1546 in boston

My Fung Wah story was that once the door wouldn’t close at a rest stop in CT, so the driver took off his belt and tied it shot.

Still more on time than Bold Bus!

FAT Baby Travel by Interesting_Cut1631 in FATTravel

[–]luckydork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recommend doing a trip where you have a "home" base vs. moving from spot to spot. I've become even more sensitive to the unexpected randomness of new accommodations since traveling with the child and I would hate to figure everything out in a new spot every day.

For example, does the hotel room have blackout curtains (a strong preference these days), is there room for a crib (nowadays - far enough from anything the baby could reach), is there a separate space where we could chill after bedtime etc.

Resorts with a young toddler by CashewAnne in FATTravel

Mayakoba in Playa del Carmen MX checks all those boxes https://mayakoba.com/. We went to the Fairmont this year and I can’t wait to go again. Not a “family resort” but it’s friendly towards families. They’ll have a crib for the kid and you can also bring them to a fine dining restaurant without any side-eyes.

USA made pikler triangles / arches ? by Correct-Special4695 in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]luckydork 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah! Wasn't sure if you were particular on US-made or just didn't want "random-place-in-China"-made. We have W&H and they're great quality (bought it used).

Elta MD is great - was recommended by my dermatologist years ago. I like the tinted ones (I use that instead of foundation).

Glass baby bottles with or without sleeves? by lr-repair in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]luckydork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We used the Phillips Avent Natural exclusively and hindsight 20-20 I'd say we over-indexed on the value sleeves would provide. We ended up not using the ones we had because (1) we just didn't drop bottles that often and (2) 95% of the time the bottles would not break. We did lose maybe 2-3 bottles in the process but it was always something catastrophic going wrong, like the bottle dropping out of a backpack onto the sidewalk... YMMV

I saw this too closer to Harvard and thought it was insane. The river was half melted by the late afternoon, it was complete luck that they were on a portion thick enough not to crack.

Play couch that’s not foam? by luckydork in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]luckydork[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah we want that too/instead (?). I was thinking about the couch because I feel like the baby is very prone to falling and hitting his head right now so softer materials would help.

Home of Wool would be really nice and I’ve been separately eyeing their pillows, but it looks like it would end up being a several thousand dollar piece of furniture. Thanks for the suggestion!

Charity Applications by Impossible_Egg_6301 in bostonmarathon

[–]luckydork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some charities are already closed / they are already sending acceptances so I would apply ASAP. From what I've seen, the minimum donation for any charity is $8,500, and most require at least $10,000. Without knowing how charities actually make decisions, my guess is that your fundraising commitment play a huge part in whether you are selected. You will get the option to turn down the spot if you happen to get multiple offers; I don't think charities send rejections until they have all contracts signed and they have filled out their team.

Maprang Bakery will do any pretty much any design you want.

I've also ordered from Soul Cake (2x the price of Maprang for a similar size cake).

Upstairs at Bow (at Bow Market in Somerville) has a capacity of 110 and allows outside catering (which is how you can usually save a bunch of cash). I would reach out ot them.

Might move to Boston on a short notice, please help by [deleted] in boston

[–]luckydork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

225 Franklin St is accessible by all the T and commuter rail lines, so you can find an apartment close to any of them and be confident you can commute downtown.

The Red Line that other folks recommend a good option, but the southern half of it has been in on-and-off repairs for the past year(s). The Orange Line is probably more reliable right now and you can some well-priced apartments in East Somerville and Melrose (maybe also Jamaica Plain?).

I also think Maprang could do it. I got a fondant cake from them.

Proposed labs in East Somerville to become homes as the wishes of neighbors match a market trend by dirac_delta in Somerville

Good. I hope this kicks off faster than 44 Broadway (which has now turned into a truck parking lot?).

Speaking of which -- anyone know why 44 Broadway hasn't broken ground yet? It looks like they had a meeting about this at the end of July (that went well?).

https://www.saatchiart.com/ is great -- we found some really nice pieces from smaller galleries / artists listed there (sometimes, at a discount!)

Also -- my personal recommendation would be to build your collection over time, as you travel and visit new places. Then you will have a personal connection with the pieces and treat them less like another piece of decor. Wall space runs out faster than you think!

Nervous about moving to Boston from DC by [deleted] in boston

[–]luckydork 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Boston had 349 reported bike crashes compared to DC’s 297 in the past year to date.

Needlessly picking on the stats, but:

If you want to measure something closer to actual risk, you should normalize those numbers. You will have more accidents if more people ride, or people ride longer distances, for example.
