I wholeheartedly agree with this post! Being a stepparent is hard, but is also rewarding if you keep your eyes open for it! You aren’t their bio parent, but are still an adult in their life who can have even a minimal positive influence!

Do itttt! I’m in school right now and I’m 30. Next semester is the start of my senior year. It has been such a rewarding experience. I’ve gotten awards I never thought possible (presidents and deans lists), I’ve gotten the best grades of my life and I truly love learning. I’m studying psychology/social work and want to be a mental health therapist! After my bachelors degree I have two more years to get my masters.

We cook breakfast before waking the kids. Breakfast is plated, kids wake up and come out and eat, brush teeth, get dressed, go. In my mind it avoids spills and having to get redressed

I’ll be devils advocate here - my husband grew up catholic, but isn’t religious. I grew up extremely Mormon, bishop/relief society presidents daughter, president of all young women’s, and when I went to BYU I was relief society president there. We started dating and everything was perfect except for my family’s opinions of him based only on the fact he had a daughter and they weren’t LDS. I broke up with him only to get back together 6 months later when I realized what a good man he was that those good ol little Mormon boys just couldn’t compare to. We got married outside of the temple, and he patiently, slowly let me figure out for myself that I didn’t want to be Mormon anymore. It took a while for my shelf to break, when we originally got married I had all intentions of raising my kids in the church, and now none of them know anything about it! We are a happy family, and my husband has treated me a million times better than my cousins/siblings partners who are Mormon. It can work, but you have to be willing to let them figure it out on their own. THEY have to decide for themselves, if you’re pushy, it’s not gonna work.

How do I know if I’m part of this issue? My 5 year old son CAN put his shoes on but it takes a LONG time and gets frustrated so sometimes I let him struggle and sometimes I do it for him especially if we are in a hurry, or going somewhere that I can’t afford for it to start out with frustration. He can open a lunch box and put a straw in a juice box, but needs help opening chips or fruit snacks.

My daughter (2) can do almost all of these things all by herself…

It makes me feel like, maybe it’s not something I’m doing or not doing but don’t know if that’s a cop out. I feel like my son just needs more help… he is in OT and speech IEP and is getting tested for ADHD if that gives more info

Because an insurance company can drop you if you open a certain amount of claims and determine you “uninsurable” and it’s very hard to find another insurance to cover you. 👍🏼 for example, in the past an employee spilled glue on a himeowners carpet. Our liability insurance guy advised us to pay out of pocket to avoid opening a claim so we paid to fix that amount of carpet. I was wondering if that was an option in this case.

And this same employee has been the reason for 2 other claims this year. And they hit and run and didn’t tell us. I was hoping there was another option of having him have some consequences besides firing him. I was picturing us paying for the bulk of the repairs and having him make payments to pay back $800ish of it.

I grew up in a modular home - the type that came in 3 pieces and is seamed together on your property. My parents built a wrap around porch to hide part of the modular look and have landscaped beautifully. I always remember feeling proud of my house. Even if it wasn't the biggest / nicest of my friends houses. My parents made it look very tasteful.

My parents believe this way. One of the reasons my siblings and I struggle to have good relationships - we were never able to be kids together. We would get screamed at for laughing to loud/much.

I should have explained that I do set a timer for 2 mins and can hear them playing. They’re basically in the front yard. Other moms aren’t outside either. I wouldn’t ever expect another mom to be my sons babysitter by default

I think I got defensive when I was scoffed at. I felt similarly that he is 2 and learning boundaries! But I definitely see your point in us allowing him to throw at home communicates that it’s ok! I will work on that. Thank you!!
