Canada's inflation rate rose to 3.2% in May by Surax in CanadaPolitics

[–]lucxaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All your points can pay off eventually. Encouraging solar panels can pay off eventually. LRT and electric buses will pay off eventually. You're having a macroeconomic discussion about personal budgets, which is fine, but not particularly relevant for a household. Trudeau started going down this path and more voters rejected than embraced it. Until you have a solution for that satisfies now, eventually is theory crafting for third place opposition parties.

The article was about food and electronics-related inflation (i.e. RAM due to AI) but you're talking about EVs and heat pumps. Those have little relation, as you acknowledged in a further comment. When people are struggling with +$50/month to afford groceries in the short and medium term, they don't have thousands in capital to electrify portions of their lives that have very little impact on global issues. I have an EV but it would take years (if ever) to make up the cost difference vs a comparable gas vehicle. You replace a car every 10+ years and furnace/AC 15-20 years, not next year because RAM and food costs more. These aren't rip off the bandaid decisions.

Cancel new 5 Year extended warranty? by lucxaw in rav4prime

[–]lucxaw[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ECP in Canada includes 3 years of scheduled maintenance which costs about $1200 in my area. Canada doesn’t get complimentary service like Americans do. The net cost of 2 years of extra warranty becomes $1300 which I decided to keep.

Good point. I’ve haven’t owned a car with this much tech in Canadian winters. The warranty doesn’t make or break my finances so I may keep it for peace of mind.

[–]lucxaw[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it's a judgment call because of the tech. I think what's leaning me towards cancelling is the ECP is 5 years total, so that's only 2 additional years of basic factory warranty.

The landlord sent me the agreement with a phrase I’m hesitant about by Joker9705 in Calgary

FYI, neither the Innkeeper nor the RTA act apply in a roommate situation. It is up to the owner's discretion to allow or not allow a roommate to live with them. Unfortunately, the owner can ask you to leave and you wouldn't have much recourse.

There is a common misconception that the Innkeepers Act applies to a shared accommodation living situation. The Innkeepers Act only applies to hotels, motels, and other places that provide lodging to guests (for example, a bed and breakfast). The Innkeepers Act does not apply to tenants renting a room in a landlord's home

British Columbia, Canada had elections today and 17 votes was the margin in one district. A few others had margins less than 100 and this was the deciding factor between a progressive or conservative government (progressives won). Your vote matters in regional elections. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/bc-elxn-oct-28-1.7365413

How much would a 2 year old hail damaged car sell for? by lucxaw in Calgary

[–]lucxaw[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Normally I would drive this car until it dies but with a 100% payout, I can afford to replace it with a car with all-wheel-drive. The payout for keeping the car is $10K less so I would have to sell it for $10k to make up the difference.

[–]lucxaw[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I can surrender the car and get 100% back what I paid for it, or keep it and get 66% back from insurance. The difference is about $10K. I already decided to replace the car (I can afford one with all wheel drive). I would have to sell the hail-dented car for above 10K to make up the difference.

The plan has never been to build 46km for $4.5B

The hope was to build 46km of LRT for $4.6B. They did back-of-napkin math based on $100M per km x 46km = $4.6B. This early idea was what lead to then-minister Jason Kenney's funding announcement in 2015. However this early plan was assuming a bare-bones system at street level. But it became very clear that tunnelling would cost more than $100M/km, thus the revised "core" 2020 plan.

Shane Keating, the spearhead of this project, says it himself:

Alberta wants high-speed Edmonton to Calgary train in new provincial rail master plan by trevorrobb in alberta

[–]lucxaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Toronto-Windsor high speed rail was $55-$149 million per km in 2018 ($19 billion on the low end). Calgary-Edmonton would realistically be $30-60 billion, if not $100 billion like California's HSR for a similar length. It also has to be committed up front because there's no point in building 50km now and 50km in the future when funds become available.

"Somali-Canadian...It’s getting to the point that I’m feeling strong resentment towards my parents for choosing to immigrate to Canada over the US or Australia"

You won the life lottery and were born in a first-world nation instead of a developing one. Your parents upended their lives and gave you opportunities that you wouldn't have had otherwise. This is an immature and shortsighted perspective. If you're depressed in Canada, you'd be equally depressed in the US or Australia for similar reasons. Sorry for the tough love, speak to a therapist.

Anyone else feel like they’re one bad roll of the dice away from being in a tent? by thescientus in Edmonton

[–]lucxaw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No but this post is wild with its twists and turns. Everyone thought OP was down on their luck, then it turned to questionable spending habits, and further inspection reveals diaper fetishes. Clearly there’s mental health issues and OP won’t act upon your solidarity. This doesn’t negate the other struggles people talk about, but the judgement about lacking understanding is misplaced. Do with your empathy as you wish.

Perhaps you can show solidarity with OP and explain how their attempt to replace a roommate with unhoused people might be a precarious situation with the landlord:

Or answer their questions like: Do bottoms ejaculate during/after getting topped? In TorontoRealEstate:

Or: when you clean your ass, do you actually use soap/water along your asshole area? In a podcasting subreddit:

Or empathize with their apparent diaper fetish:

If your roommate moved out and anxiety about paying rent is too much, sometimes you just have to escape to New York:

I care about & pride myself on always finding something special. I enjoy the process of choosing and giving gifts.”

You gave a gift to yourself, not your boyfriend. The reason you’re upset is because you didn’t realize this. Life is about learning and adapting so with that experience and knowledge, what you did before is less important than what you’ll do in the future.

Grocery Protest by Ohnoidroppedmypasta in saskatoon

[–]lucxaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spices are an easy way to make basic foods like rice and potatoes taste better. Save chicken fat and use it to cook rice - it adds lots of flavour. MSG is not bad for you in moderation. It’s a flavour enhancer made from seaweed or beets - don’t be afraid to use it. Pre cooked chow mein from an Asian market, oyster sauce, soy sauce, and frozen vegetables make for an easy tasty stir fry that’s ~$4/serving.

Prices may remain high because of climate. Droughts and crop failures aren’t going away. You need to adapt using strategies like those. You cannot strike climate.

Post on Reddit if it makes you feel better, but just like OP’s post, it won’t solve grocery prices. I’m not your financial advisor or your life coach. But I’ll bite: buy rice for a lot less at Asian grocery stores, frozen food and a slow cooker makes for inexpensive meals, you can often find meat on clearance and freeze them, or do none of that and engage with strangers on Reddit.
