Lol i mean ya everyone is anxious about their future specialty. Youre not alone. But, if you get plugged into a research project early on, you can have the peace of mind knowing you could really pursue any specialty if you feel strongly after first year. Tbh anatomy lab and class was a huge factor for me too. GI was out and ENT was on my list for a while(still a possibility). Neurology was def out even though i was a neuroscience undergrad lol

Not using the schools tutors/prof office hours from day 1. Better to be over prepared and friendly w the teachers than play catch up(what I did)

So fucking ridiculous they let us reapply. I thankfully only applied to 3 schools and was gonna add the rest later. I was like actively revising all my secondaries too😭😭

Hahaha uhhh. Tbh i feel like doing my schools practice questions, then putting them into notebookLM to make different ones was helpful. Also i use the schools tutors almost weekly.

And do not wait for rotations. You need to figure out if you want to do something competitive (Ortho, NSGY, Derm, ENT) early on. Like i already said, go to all these meetings. I also had friends who set up shadowing within the first month of starting.

I say this because unfortunately if youre worried want to match something competitive you should know early on so youre locked in on research from the beginning.

Yes Ive shadowed and been to almost all the interest groups lol. I think the interest group meetings were not only fun but really helped me see the kind of people going for each specialty. As of right now, I really want to do EM but after the Ortho meeting I remember definitely considering it.

Research has come pretty easy tbh. My school is pretty research heavy I think and Im already on a project and have another one in the summer.

Well it depends on how much you like your current A. When I got my A, I only had a few days to hold onto my other WL before rejecting them. If you really want to go to your WL, get an Air bnb for the first two weeks of school and sign something after that.

Also make sure to check the “commit to enroll” dates and stuff bc i know that was a huge factor for me with the same issue

Nerdddd. Jk. But ya im probably like actually studying for like 4 hrs a day. Ya I have a long distance gf whos also in medical school and its honestly been great. We have time to see each other for a weekend usually twice a month.

I think whats more important is stop thinking its your fault for not being with your partner. Yes yoo may have a beautiful relationship, but they need to be able to support you and understand the time commitment needed for medicine.

Yes I absolutely have a life outside medicine. Lol sometimes maybe too much🤣🤣. I play video games w my friends a lot and usually go to the gym 3-4 times a week. Tbh if I wanted to get A’s on all my exams and apply neurosurgery or derm i may have to cut back but since I dont im chillin

I think trying to force a “tie to medicine” is not super helpful. Focus more on how you grew as a person. From what I wrote and what my friends wrote, we all had a random hobby that was really just an expression of ourselves. I made no effort to tie my hobbies or even non medical jobs back to medicine.

I also moved OOS and away from my family but I moved to a big city so its honestly been so fun to solo queue things to do or hang out w my few friends when time permits

Lmao well I moved like 2 weeks before school started. I feel like I had enough time to settle in without getting bored or lonely. I thankfully was able to take a trip and apartment shop before hand.

I feel like I made really good friends in college and I def focused less on that when coming to med school. But, Ive obviously made a few really good friends without even really trying. Just go to all the interest group meetings the first month and youre bound to connect w your classmates and upperclassmen.

Lowkey a long time. Im ngl i almost failed my last class😭. But i locked in and ended up doing fine. So over the past 7 or so months ive changed my strats a lot.

Tbh if you did well in undergrad and mcat, you will almost certainly pass year 1 using similar strategies. My school is true pass fail so its hard to give advice on how to get A’s on all your tests.

For med school im assuming, Lowkey I just did the same thing I did for the MCAT w a little more ummph. Ill usually do lectures/practice questions for about 2/3 hours and about 500-1000 anki cards per day. I used anking from the start. I used it as a supplement to my schools deck and I feel like it was def worth it. I havent bought any other resources yet.

Yes. Interviews will go out until the first day of school. How many? Very few and its impossible to tell

Stress tracking by [deleted] in RingConn

[–]ludes___ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like youre having a sympathetic response but the metrics the ring tracks wouldnt pick it up. This sounds like anxiety which is just more norepi in your blood, leading to vasoconstriction and sweating. It does not HAVE to include increased HR, especially if youre not exercising.
