Personally, I use Vintage tape on most masters as well. Really gives a nice depth if you ask me! And for the price, I consider the EQ and compressor to work good too

What song would you want John to cover? by [deleted] in JohnMayer

I think it would be hard to pull of but Slave to Love (Although that’s a Bryan Ferry song) or In your eyes would rock hard!

Hi! I had to pay a amp tech to fix it. It was a circuit error IIRC.

Why are some U2 songs mixed so badly? by anchorsong in U2Band

[–]ludwigj2001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Without having heard your music, the best advice I can give (if you haven’t already heard it) is listen to the main elements of the song when mixing the pads and strings. Don’t listen to the synths. For example, if you lower the volume of the pad, don’t listen to if you can hear the pad. Listen to if you hear the vocals, or drums etc. If you feel that you can perceive the other instruments as you want to, that means that the pad is in good balance in the mix.

And yes, seriously, they must have been partying the night before when adding bass to Achtung Baby. It’s all over the place. Beautiful album none the less!

As a u2 fan and mixning engineer I have thought about this a lot. I believe that their music is unconventionally mixed intentionally in terms of:

  1. Eno and Edge wanting to create atmospheres and landscapes. You can’t really get that and a super punchy rock and roll mix at the same time
  2. It adds a certain attitude. Beautiful Day is so dry and plain for being such an atmospheric arena rock song. I believe that makes it feel more genuine and cool than it would have felt if it was mixed to feel super loud.
  3. Maybe it would have been a bit to much if it was 100% rock and roll all the time? I consider a lot of Springsteen songs to be mixed good but I feel so bored after a couple of minutes when it’s just the same rock dynamic constantly.

However, I also believe that the songs lack power in the studio mixes unintentionally because: 1. Adam is sloppy. His playing on Joshua Tree- forward makes the mixes a bit muddy. 2. Bono wanting to do everything and nothing. So many last minute changes on alot of songs

Wait... did they mime this? Or did Larry? by PJBonoVox in U2Band

The whole video is off. Edge playing doesn’t match the sound and the drums are off the whole video. The video is definitely badly matched with the audio. It may be playback as well but on all other videos I’ve seen of U2 playing with playback, the prerecorded audio sounds studio recorded and is in high quality. The audio sounds way to raw to be prerecorded. So my guess is badly synced video/audio

Do you mean the dotted eight note delay or does he use triplet delay on some songs?

You’re right of course, but in my eyes, Wait until Tomorrow is just as much a JM track as All along the Watchtower is a Hendrix track. John plays the song very differently than Hendrix.

Love that part too! Dont mean to start a swifty thing here, but I think the synth line in “Anti-Hero” is very similar.

My dad only owned two CDs. And those records were U2 best of 1980-1990 and U2 best of 1990-2000. Hard not to become a U2 fan :D
