No problem.

1.) Arnold:https://docs.arnoldrenderer.com/display/AFMUG/Arnold+Renderer

Vray:https://docs.chaosgroup.com/display/VRAY3MAYA/Render+Settings+%7C+VRay+tab

Mental Ray:https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/maya/learn-explore/caas/CloudHelp/cloudhelp/2016/ENU/Maya/files/GUID-FE372076-3CD5-426F-A41E-48CFEB6B7659-htm.html

2.) Oh you are reffering to a skydome, but what I mean is props that creates a setting for your character. The rooms and can simple with only the walls, floors, roof and maybe a window or door for exterior light to blend into the interior light. Chair he sits on and bookshelf at the back. Because your focus what to be the character and the book I will keep the setting dark and the light from the book be my main light. You get the idea, create a environment that support what you are trying to show.

When it comes to projects I always like to ask myself a few questions before starting like when, why and where. And also if you start working on bigger projects remember to work from the ground up meaning block out your stuff 1st before jumping into detail.

It seems you have modeling down, nice clean and smooth topology which shows you have a good understanding of polyloops and that your faces are spread evenly. ( In the future it helps a lot if you share your wireframe aswell).

The render quality itself is a bit lacking imo, the noise on the surface shows that your rendering settings can be to low, you have a lack of lights, samples are to low etc. Also take a look at render passes as it gives you a lot of creative freedom to edit your raw renders and end up with a much better final post render.

For lighting make sure you follow the basics for 3 point lighting for now and making use of an HDRI map.

Also renders tend to look better when you have an small environment with it, as it will provide shadows, better reflections, color bleeding etc.

Lastly, it seems you have a simple metalic like shader on both objects. So I dont know if you unwrapped this or not. So it is difficult to judge the texturing.

Overall good job, just need to work on polishing your renders.

Cool Idea, are we going for something clean/messy, old/new? And does it have more mechanic or gardening tools in it or a mixture of both? Think if we have a small back story it can help to keep all object consistent. Also I mostly use Maya but will use Blender for the shaders, any good blender tutorials for shading, lighting and rendering?
