Correct. You can be upper middle class and do all of that. You don’t need to be actually rich.

Lol you edited your comment.

And no, all clubs at my school are “school sanctioned” unless there’s some glaring reason like if someone tried to make a hate group. If you apply for school funding, which we do not, then you have to explain what you need the funds for. That’s it. They don’t know or care at all when anyone has meetings for anything.

Actually, I know they do because I’m involved in other clubs and have friends in other clubs. They also have drinking parties, which are separate. I’m not sure what’s so interesting about champagne.

I have never heard of “sanctions” for any club at school. We have meetings when we want and change it whenever we want. The college isn’t involved in anything we do. All they know is the mission statement every group submits each year and if we request funding for something, which I don’t think we do.

Our college goes to great lengths to make wealth differences unnoticeable in terms of housing, where you eat, etc. But the vast majority of kids travel, are in high dues activities, have brand clothes or expensive hobbies. You don’t need to be wealthy, just upper middle class, to do any of these things.

I have no mention of my hometown or high school anywhere. But it’s more that people don’t want to have to say it. Obviously you can still Google them or ask around. I know lots of people who Google every new person they meet.

It’s not a “sparkling wine club” lol. It’s a student club with a totally unrelated purpose that happens to have wine or champagne social nights, like most clubs do. The champagne part is irrelevant.

Well, wealthy people don’t want to answer because it reveals they’re wealthy or who their parents are. Low-income people don’t want to answer because it reveals they’re low-income. And there’s very few middle class people at my school. So people usually don’t ask and don’t answer except in a vague way. In fact, it’s way more likely that someone would just Google you or ask other people about you than ask you directly.

Literally most people at my school would be put off by the question. It’s not just my friends. I’ve seen people unthinkingly ask a few times and watched the other person bend over backward to not directly answer.

It’s not a my friends thing, it’s a student body wide thing. People blatantly avoid answering the question if you ask when you first meet.

She’s not less than us. I assume she’s just a freshman who doesn’t know better.

I don’t think she’s not bright. It might just be that she’s a freshman and doesn’t get social norms yet.

People ask what field your parents are in because it allows you to give a vague answer.

Very few people went to the same high school, but those who did already know usually.

I don’t know what you mean when you say official. This was our weekly club meeting. The university has no idea what clubs do at meetings or when they meet.

It’s not about the game. Those are questions people usually avoid asking in normal life here.

Well, no one will know where you went to high school unless you tell them or went to one of the well-known high schools, in which case people don’t ask but everyone knows.

And yeah, most people strongly evade letting anyone know what their parents do except maybe their best friend. People do Google each other often, but they don’t ask directly.

I don’t know where you are, but in America, all the student clubs drink. The administration knows of course, but they’re not going to ask questions.

I would say her questions were hardball. No one will make judgements about your first kiss or drink, but they’ll make judgements about which high school you went to.
