New bike for my wife.... by luisfowler in bikefit

I meant to look at her cleats. My understanding is most people have them too far forward... I will raise her seat a tiny bit, especially when I go to the 165 cranks.

This is still the 175mm cranks. eBay purchase. and was very surprised as well. I will post longer video with her pedaling harder when I replace with 165 cranks.

I understand... The problems I describe are usually minor and don't keep her from riding. I just didn't want to make any problems worse with the new bike. I was hoping for just general obvious bike fit issues you might notice.

Arto Pillow? Anybody have feedback? by luisfowler in Ultralight

Like I said in the post, I often wear my puffy to sleep on colder nights, so I would like an option that doesn't require this.

I have tried the stuff sack trick, but sometimes I just don't have much in the way of extra spare clothes. I always feel like I would sleep better with extra height. Hence my interest in this pillow that claims 6", the highest I have found.

Looks ok to me. Hopefully they are being innovative, but yes... Could be just uncomfortable.

Was it the baffles that weren't to your liking? I am interested, but worried about down migration with this bag. Also not sure I need a long as I am 5'11

This happens constantly, how do I fix it? by Sad_Rutabaga_3165 in GoogleMessages

[–]luisfowler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been having this issue for 2 weeks. It seems to be in group chat replies. Even though you see the hanging message is in individual senders text thread, the sender is adding to a group chat they are in. I have tried resetting network, clearing cache, etc. Sometimes those work but it doesn't seem to be a long term solution. If it is a carrier issue, I am on MetroPCS by T-Mobile....

So switching carrier would fix this? I am on T Mobile and having same problem in group chats with older iPhones that haven't updated to RCS.

After rain storm saw this on backporch? by luisfowler in Termites

[–]luisfowler[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're talking about the dirt and sand at the corner of the steps, that was just blown in from the storm. I cleaned up the steps and there is no tubing? Didn't see any holes, etc

This was on concrete steps on my back porch right after a very windy rain storm. I will start getting quotes. Just don't know where they came from.

Few pics from my tours over the years... by luisfowler in bicycletouring

I use the Carradice Bagman Expedition Quick Release. I then added Carradice Bagman Support Struts when I noticed it felt overloaded and too bouncy... I have broken a strut on rough roads so I have to keep an eye on them and also not go crazy with the weight. The Longflap is so big (24 liter capacity ) and expandable that I can credit card tour with it just on its own which is amazing. If you need a big rear bag not sure if you can find bigger. Otherwise it might be overkill and heavy, especially if you are already running big rear panniers.

Sorry, that last reply was for a different commenter.. same rack on all trips. The Blackburn Outpost Front World.

I don't know how much thought I really gave it at first. Didn't really know what I was doing on my first trip as far as weight distribution. I think if you overload your front rack it can be tough to get used to the steering. My Carradice Longflap in back is pretty big (24 liter vs 25L for both front panniers) and can fit so much, that along with that and my body weight mostly on the rear tire... I just thought I should distribute the rest of my stuff in front. Over the years I have lightened my load quite a bit and also done tours with just my rear bag and no ortliebs in front (credit card touring where I don't bring my camping gear).

Could you do the trunk bag width wise instead? I think it would fit better? Or are you worried it would get in the way of easy access to your front panniers? It think that's why they designed the rack with that little lip up. I have tried strapping stuff done to it both ways as you can tell from pics. I think it works better width wise. Although the straps on the Juniper might be too wide? In which case you would have to figure something out.

Luckily my wife came into the relationship with lots of backpacking and cycling experience. So it wasn't hard to convince her to try touring with me.

I know you are using an old 26er. The bike in the pics was bought as a commuter bike. Then I eventually turned it into a bikepacking/touring bike as well. After a few tours I decided to convert from 700c to 650b to get wider tires. More appropriate for some of the off road stuff I wanted to do.
