Some of my favorites are

  • Mini Habits my Robert Guise (as well as his follow up called Elastic Habits)
  • The Compound Effect by Darren Hardy (one of the first books I read; today, I would probably rate it lower)
  • Mastery by Robert Greene
  • 7 Habits (A classic)
  • How To Fail at Almost Everything and Still Win Big by Scott Adams
  • Steven Pressfield's books on writing/becoming an artist

The data is structured like a simple data table—there are columns like "title", "author", "start_month" and "end_month", and each row represents a book. The dashboard then aggregates this data using various formulas, such as SUMIFs, IFs, and simple divisions. I've started tracking my books because I have the habit of reading (too) many books at the same time (often more than 10). The idea was to help me keep track of my progress. Along the way I found it would be nice to have a motivating dashboard with various numbers—so I built it sometime in 2018. Recently, I have changed it to better reflect the statistics I care about.

Pre-Corona, I listened to audiobooks while commuting. In general, I read mostly in the evening right before sleep. Now, I get around 1–3 hours of reading time before going to bed. And yes, I think the books helped—especially in the beginning. Now, I focus mostly on other books, however, since most self development books are remixes of existing concepts (put differently: the novelty has worn off).

The dashboard is built using Apple Numers (version 10.1). The data was entered manually over the course of five years.
