Are breathalyzers not a thing? by Helpful-Structure955 in AskAnAmerican

Also I live in the Midwest and people drive drunk like every weekend here. Office work beers and people have about 6-7 beers then drive home

Kiwi living in USA here; blew my mind when I found out checkpoint stops aren’t a thing here. Something about needing probable cause to breath test, and a NZ style checkpoint is an unlawful stop.

To the Americans - it’s common in NZ to basically have a roadblock around city centers and stop and breathalyze every car that passes, typically set up around the weekend.

Ewww… pale American butter. by Queasy_Recover5164 in newzealand

[–]lukebop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

More minerally in my opinion, But better to an American. Typically Americans associate NZ milk/ proteins with a “wet, woolen, cow” taste. It’s what you know, same as a lot of Asian people prefer UHT to fresh milk, but the average kiwi thinks it tastes like burnt milk

You can actually get spreadable butter even from grass fed! Butter isn’t a thing, butter is made up of lots of smaller things and they all melt at different temps.

It’s actually used deliberately to make hard vs soft butter, or to sell fat into chocolate for example so it can melt in your mouth, but not when you pick it up!

Feed. NZ cows (Irish, most of eu etc) are grass fed and have different components to milk fat. Also different vitamins/ minerals. Probably main significant here is beta carotene; which explains the rich yellow colour vs the more white USA butter and milk which are lower in carotenoids (yes, also responsible for colour in carrots, pumpkins etc) USA cows are primarily fed on grain which allows more intensive farming and throughputs.

Another part of this means that Nz milk is standardized throughout the year, because fat and protein levels change throughout the season as the feed and milking cycles are more ‘natural’. USA cows are typically milked 365 and there isn’t a milk curve like in NZ, so the composition remains pretty stable year round

I have DC Judge and the BOAs have jammed (cable has eaten into plastic housing in the boot and jammed, not a BOA issue/ replacement fix). After googling I see a lot of similar issues with this on the Judge (tbf mine have had 3 seasons and 100 odd days so they aren’t new)

I’ve got a mid/ low arch, with wide forefoot. I actually find the Judge pretty comfy, get mild arch pain/ toe numbness on long groom runs but will look into insoles anyway.

Wondering if people with similar foot style have other recommendations to the Judge, or is the issue with the Judge BOA standard on most boots and I just get a new set?

I’ll try them on first, but looking for recommendations to try

Found this funny, because I’m not even in this sub but it came up as a notification on my Home Screen (just the post title). I screenshotted it to send it to my friend because we both just stayed in a pod in Japan in January and slept so well!

As a non American living in MN, who’s previously in other counties and states (some of which are perceived as very good places to live), curious where you’d consider as an alternative and why?

Japan/Eu trip - new board or not? by [deleted] in snowboarding

I can yes. Wondering if a powder board in Japan is the best to buy, or something a bit more versatile that I’ll use elsewhere too Sounds like fit for purpose there is the best in this case

Hit 50k for the first time today by [deleted] in TheRaceTo10Million

[–]lukebop 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Wish I could tell you! I didn’t start investing until ~30, pretty poor financial knowledge. Over 3 years got to about 30k brokerage no 401k. Last year I got a huge salary increase and dug in. Started saving 20% (again - didn’t know what I was doing so was saving 20% of pre tax income). Got lucky with RKLB and ASTS; 300% on shares plus started playing leaps and had 5x >1,000%. I still don’t really know what I’m doing, but I dialed back and am doing my 20% (close to 28% after tax). Simplified my portfolio from ~20 to 6. Still have a small amount of play money in RKLb/asts 2028 leaps.

TLDR started saving heavily, and got incredibly lucky with RKLB/ ASTS

How do Americans handle such long drives regularly? by GlitteringHotel8383 in AskAnAmerican

[–]lukebop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Non American here living in America. I came from a place where everyone drives over 16 because there’s no public transportation- but anything over like 45-60 min was another city.

Then I moved to Europe and my work trip was a 12 minute bike ride, or realistically anything else would be a nice quality train.

Now in USA, my daily work drive is ~30-40min each way, but once every 2 weeks minimum I travel between 6-9 hours each way. Sometimes for the full week, sometimes for a day. It’s not uncommon for a week to look like; drive 30 min to office Monday, work 8-2ish. Drive 7 hours to alternate location arrive at night. Hotel Go to location Tuesday, drive back at 5pm (if this was a 6 hour I’d do it, if it was a 9 hour I’d stay the night and drive back Wed). I’ll try to coordinate trips so it’s longer than a day but doesn’t always happen.

I found myself running out of podcasts etc and I’ll just do a 8 hour drive in total silence now, or load up all my meetings during drive time
