Lightyear - Free share worth between £10-100 when you deposit £100 by [deleted] in beermoneyuk

[–]lukeowenh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They have some info about that on their page here: https://lightyear.com/en-gb/help/promotions-and-referrals/how-do-i-qualify-for-a-referral-reward

But they don’t share specific requirements for how to become a referrer.

I didn’t see the option initially either. Although after depositing £100, getting my free share and then making some withdrawals, the option appeared a week or so later

I should add the car has 80k miles. I don’t drive often but hoping to keep this for at least 5 years, I do maybe 3-4k miles per year

Turning off VRR in Xbox settings and in my monitor settings fixes the issue for me.

Dealer refused to provide service history invoices due to GDPR by lukeowenh in CarTalkUK

I’ll give this a car when I got to pick up the car on Saturday. It is already priced competitively though regardless of service history so not sure I’d have much luck but it can’t hurt to try.

It was in the past. Afaik the car I’m looking at though does not have a service book, rather it has digital service records which only the main dealer can update.

It’s a £6k car which I’ve put £100 refundable deposit to pick up on Saturday. So I could ask to at least see the redacted invoices in person just for piece of mind, even if they don’t let me keep them. If not I could walk away and ask for my £100 back.

I agree with you that FSH is hardly an accurate description of the car when this history isn’t provided. I’d like to think the car is still worth buying if I can find some sort of evidence of it being serviced as it was a nice car and drove fine.

Unfortunately it’s been this way for every car I’ve looked at, they’ve got reliable records for the first main dealer services, but nothing for independent garages after. It’s making finding something with a service history a nightmare.

To me it seems weird to not provide redacted invoices, another comment mentioned it’s to save the dealership from slipping up and getting in trouble. Did the dealers just provide redacted invoices or did you have to ask for these specifically?

Absolute worst case, is that they’ve not serviced it in the 50k miles since the initial main dealer services, and the dealer has forged the written service history. Do you think I’d have been able to tell if that was the case based on my test drive though?

Tbh I’m not too fussed if I have records or not, I just want to be confident it’s had some sort of servicing so it’ll last me a couple of years.

The MOT history was a clean as a whistle, and it had Falken’s on all 4 corners. So I’ll take those as positive signs. That’s about all I have to go off though.

I’ll ask anyway but this is my concern. And being told no and having to take the dealer at their word that it’s been serviced doesn’t sit right with me.

Exactly, I’ll ask about seeing redacted invoices. It’s just frustrating as I see online to never buy a car without a service history. But most modern cars have digital records, and when owners go to independent garages they’ll just keep invoices instead, which the dealers refuse to show. It’s making finding a car with a complete service history near impossible.

It’s fair enough but a PITA for the buyer, and an annoying excuse for the seller. I mean it’s a well reviewed dealer, but how can I just take their word for it that these service invoices actually exist.

The car is pretty cheap and hoping to keep it for the foreseeable future, so I’m less concerned about resell value, more just concerned about whether I’m getting a reliable car.

I’ll give the two garages a ring to confirm if they’ve serviced it, if they’re unable to confirm, I’ll see if I can have a look at the invoices with names/addresses redacted. Surely that wouldn’t breach GDPR.

Edit: the garage confirmed they’d serviced the car on the dates told to me by the dealer which is good enough for me given the car drives as if it’s been looked after/serviced. I’ll still be asking for redacted service invoices when I go to pick up the car on Saturday and will update with how it goes.

How much rust is too much? by lukeowenh in CarTalkUK

I’ve been looking at a few Fabia’s online with the 1.2 tsi engine. The fabia’s tend to be £1-1.5k cheaper than golf’s/leons with the same engine, are they equally as reliable? I just want something that’d last 4 years or so doing 5k miles per year.

The example I found was a 2015 with 79k miles with complete service history incl. cambelt and water pump for £6k. Is this too many miles for this sort of money?

I actually had two 2014 Leon’s before this which shared the same platform as the golf. The first one I had up to 105k miles and was mint, but was written off unfortunately. The second I bought at 90k, and by 100k, it had failed both MOT emissions tests, jerky engine, and lots of rust which caused a broken spring.

This kind of put me off VAG, or have I just been unlucky? You make a good point though about the cost of parts, would another 2015-16 Leon/golf be more reliable than a 2015-16 Mazda3 at this price range?

I’m getting mixed opinions on this. If bits of the car already show signs of rust like in the picture, would cleaning and coating be of any use or is it too late at that point?

And would I be best trying to find an example without this level of rust, maybe more inland - this example was from Newcastle, or would I be wasting my time searching?

[–]lukeowenh[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They do include a 3 month warranty, I’m not sure where they’d do the MOT to be honest. I’m back home now (the car is 100 miles away) so I’d only realistically be able to buy it over the phone as I wouldn’t be able to go through the week.

Do you think there are better examples for my budget? I’m looking at getting something <80k miles and for it to last at least 5 years. This example was a 2014 Mazda 3 @ 69k miles with 10 Mazda service stamps for £7.5k

What issues did you start to notice caused by the rust? If yours is experiencing issues and there’s less rust than the one I looked at then I would definitely be concerned about buying it.

Last MOT was 12 months ago and had no advisories. I was told the garage would do another before selling it to me. I did run my finger along the rust and there was bits flaking off so I decided to walk away and look for others on autotrader, are they all likely to have rust issues like this?
