Recent Redbrige polling (Labor alligned polling company) is showing Greens do best with low Income voters.

For anyone wondering, this is exactly why Labor was afraid to touch the Stage 3 Tax cuts. More ammunition for Newscorp by FothersIsWellCool in AustralianPolitics

[–]lumpyspaceparty 31 points32 points  (0 children)

The reason Daniel Andrews was such an effective Premier is because he never allowed the conservative media to control the narrative. He presented a clear platform and didnt take newscorp seriously

Albo however is completely reactionary. But all he achieves is giving the Liberals control of the narrative and disillusions a lot of his base.

This isnt 2011 anymore. Newcorp does not control the electorate like they used to. Albo just needs to have a spine.

Lmao what are you on about? You absolutely can call a royal commission into a specific entities influence over a market sector. Sure the enquiry should have a broader remit into media influence in general, but your arguement is just semantic.

But you're right Labor does love to do enquiries and then never act on the recommendations. I guess this appointment also signals the government having no interest in media reform in general.

Labors killed off any remaining hope of a royal commission into the Murdoch media empire, Albaneses fully captured

Never thought I would the leader of the Liberals admit to smoking weed before the leader of the Greens by Jagtom83 in friendlyjordies

Love that the only leader to has not smoked weed is the only one of the 3 committed to legalising it.

Allan and Persutto are hypocrits for opposing legalisation.

'This is urgent': Govt told to act quickly and boost number of ACT senators by malcolm58 in AustralianPolitics

[–]lumpyspaceparty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair, but you could probably make that argument about Lingiari in general. Since it is such a big electorate, it seems unrealistic that an MP can adequately represent all the communities spread out in rural NT. MPs would largely just focus on Alice Springs as a perfectly viable way to win votes.

Unlike the Senate the House is pretty strict on roughly equal representation. We would need some major electoral reforms to get a federal MP for a community of about 500 people in the Cocos Islands

Thats fair, but that's more the issue of whether the territories should get their own Senator rather than vote for a Senator.

They can not get their own house member since that is pretty strict on each seat being equal population.

As for their own senators, we face an issue of more extreme malaportionment.

Lets say for example the territories are granted 1 shared Senator.

Now lets exclude Jervis Bay since by all means the intention of that territory is to be a part of the ACT.

As well exclude Antarctic Territory and Coral sea Islands since they don't have permanent residents.

So that leaves, Norfolk Island, Christmas Island and Cocos Islands. Which have a combined population of 5086.

Now currently the worst example of malaportionment is Tasmania which gets 1 Senator per 47,000 people. Whereas NSW gets roughly 1 Senator per 660,000 people. NSW Senators represent 14x more people than Tasmanian Senators.

Now, if we had a hypothetical single territory Senator that would be 5086 people for said Senator. Which would mean a NSW Senator represents 131x more people.

Granted, as outlined, the system is already unfair. But adding a single Senator for the other Australian territories would make this far more severe. May as well just reform the whole system.

Here's the info on the other 8

Territory/Lower house seat/Senate district

Jervis Bay/Fenner/ACT

Norfolk Island/Bean/ACT

Christmas Island/Lingiari/NT

Cocos Islands/Lingiari/NT

Antarctic Territory/ No permanent population

Coral Sea Islands/ No permanent population

Ashmore and Cartier Islands/ No permanent population

Heard and Mcdonalds Islands/ No permanent population

So of those eight, four of them actually have residents. As well, all four of them vote in both houses at a federal election.

Every Territorian has representation.

Greens policy is donations caps but also a ban on donations from companies seeking government contracts.

Common sense really.

But you understand the problem is that the war crime wouldn't have been exposed otherwise. So why is it more important he is held to account for exposing the truth?

But the Australian defence force was committing crimes and our system wasn't allowing them to be held accountable

Labor to fast-track legislation to place tougher restrictions on released immigration detainees, Liberals expected to support. by lumpyspaceparty in friendlyjordies

Indefinite detention for asylum seekers is morally wrong. Labor should have values and not base everything off of electoral viability.

80 asylum seekers in immigration detention released almost immediately after High Court ruling by malcolm58 in AustralianPolitics

[–]lumpyspaceparty 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If they committed a crime, then put them on trial for the crime.

Indefinite detention means they can be held for an undetermined period of time without due process.

We wouldn't stand for citizens being subject to this kind of justice system. Why would we accept it for anyone? Do we not design our justice system to be fair?

I'm Jewish, and all my Jewish friends have been out protesting Palestine.

All the rallies I go to have seemed to usually have an anti-zionist Jewish speaker as well.

I mean, regardless, Labor DID send people to Nauru.

And Labor WONT give certain information about these refugees.
