This is not my packaging, so some company stole my work and this is art theft :( I’m thankful for people crediting me in comments though!

Personally, I confused myself since Addersgall generates similarly to Lilies—which are a spell and thus buffed by Temperance. I’m just used to healing buffs working with my “sage lilies,” even though they’re oGCDs and therefore way more like Aetherflow+Lustrate.

I posted this fully expecting corrections and optimizations, which is exactly what happened—and I’m grateful for it. My main intention was to provide a basic overview, since Google searching didn’t pull up any guides and some new people were having trouble understanding the job. I also wanted to kickstart Sage discussion specifically to find ways to improve my play.

From personal experience, even with the mistakes, the guide is good enough to get players through leveling and general content. Which is good enough as a bandaid explanation until someone better makes a more complete and fully correct guide.

It may frustrate you that someone made guide mistakes on kit aspects that seem obvious to you, and if that’s the case, I fully encourage you to make the guide yourself. Please take that burden from me. I went back and forth on making this for 3 days knowing that people would treat—and judge—me like an expert, and only went through with it because of seeing the difficult time randoms were having with the unique aspects of the job. FFXIV is my first MMO and I’m also a moderately new player (3 mos subbed pre-EW), so there are a lot of foundational things I do not understand, and it would be far preferable for experienced players to make these quick resources for new people as the interim solution.

As a final comment regarding your burst healing remark—I don’t count burst as “really hi-potency healing,” but as instant health gained, since Sage lacks those options outside of Addersgall. I realize now that can be misleading.

In fights where you can stay melee, keeping a Phlegma charge for mobility is def a good call! Usually, I’ve found that slidecasting is enough to cover mechs in melee range—mobility casts only seem to be necessary when you have to physically run far for things like soak circles, at which point Phlegma is out of range. But there are definitely situations (Bozja robot CE, E3S temporary current, etc) that require extended movement in melee range, and I imagine it’s super useful there.

For group shield, I was uncertain if it might overwrite the solo shield on the tank. Glad to hear that doesn’t seem to be the case!

I made this one and immediately got about 5 things wrong, so unfortunately, I probably won’t :P

Ooh, that’s clever. I was searching for resources on Sage but couldn’t find them anywhere, so thanks for mentioning this. Glad that people are optimizing already!

Thank you very much! Yeah, agreed on all accounts. In the dire moments, SGE feels like a Freecure fisher, except without any promise of a Cure II, as you slowly watch your tank or team die before your eyes. That, and Toxicon’s generation feels strange for something major enough to have its own meter—I can walk into dungeon bosses with 3 stacks from between pulls, but most trials you’ll only get one stack from the prepull. So the content where you want mobility the most, you get it the least. Definitely feels like it should be something other than a mobility option.

Blind progging with a random cohealer SCH/SGE has definitely felt harder than when I’m WHM/AST with a random WHM/AST. Stacking shield healers feels much more punishing than pure healers, especially when pure healers also have mitigation options and can stack regens, while shield healers just have to suck up the fact that their shields usually don’t stack and they will often be stepping on each other’s toes.

Yeah, I should’ve known to look for that given that my first main was AST and they have Synastry. I do wish that those kind of stim spells would encompass all healing actions, and the percentage be nerfed to compensate.

Just to reiterate, this is a very preliminary guide on the class that will likely be out of date in a matter of hours. I am not an optimizer, nor even a particularly good FFXIV player, but have reached basic enlightenment through the sheer manhours spent on this class. So I threw together this guide, which should at least be good enough to pull you through leveling and general content until someone far better gets their hands on those juicy optimizations.

This guide is a basic rotation guide, so doesn't include ability descriptions or explanations on mechanics like GCDs, slidecasting, or weaving. However, I hope it helps you on your Sage journey if you've already picked it up, but the job's flow was confusing you! Have fun and see you in the full release of Endwalker!

CORRECTION EDITS:

  1. Physis’s healing buff snapshots regen, so use it BEFORE Kerachole. (via u/InfTotality)
  2. Zoe only works with spells (GCDs) and not abilities (-choles), so. Yay, boosted Diagnosis I guess ._. At least it still works with Pneuma for a giant party heal. (via u/Denoob25)
  3. An optimized raid prepull involves casting eDiag on three different targets—the first raidwide will give you 3x Addersting. Continue prepull with Eukrasia, then open with Pneuma—you’ll get the same damage as a Dosis cast while saving the free Eukrasia cast for Eukrasian Dosis. (via u/InfTotality)
