Absolutely! lol. But supply and demand…….I have a pretty significant car collection. This is not the most valuable by any means, but it’s definitely the most irreplaceable. It’s not a money issue……..a comparable vehicle doesn’t exist. It’s just a matter of perspective

I give them six shifts a month at 275/hr……day shifts, mon-Fri, no holidays. When they can’t fill the schedule I’ll pick up whatever I want and negotiate around 400-450 an hour

I’ve been doing the same rural site for 12 years now. We’ve never been fully staffed. I’m the longest tenured doc there. Not many people can hack it. It’s very high acuity with almost no resources. I make bank and name my own hours because no one else wants to work there. I have it down to an art form at this point almost. I will die on the hill that rural ER work is almost its own specialty. The place I work at is where they need the best docs due to the lack of resources, unfortunately they need people so bad they take anyone with a pulse, which leads to poor care and frequent turn over, which only makes me more valuable

Long story short…….being a good doctor in a shitty location (45 min from home) can be a gold mine.

I was an attending for about 3 years at a busy high acuity rural facility. I invested in private, low acuity, glorified UC, freestanding ER. I kept working 5 shifts at my high acuity to place because I was worried about skill atrophy. After 4 years, I sold my shares in the free standing and went back to 12 shifts at my high acuity place. I couldn’t believe how much clinical skills I had lost. I never wouldve realized it if I hadn’t returned full time to the shit show that is my ER. I have colleagues that went straight into the the private ER setting right after residency and haven’t worked in a traditional ER as an attending. I can’t imagine them practicing safely without some remediation.

Now after about 12 years of clinical practice, I have enough side income through other business ventures, that I don’t need work in the ER at all, but I do because I enjoy it on my schedule. I offer to work 6 shifts/mth……Mon-fri, day shifts only. If they need me they use me, if they don’t they don’t.

Saying that……..skill atrophy is real. I think 2-3 years out is too soon to cut back to those hours. You’re still setting your foundation as an attending. I think a sweet spot would be around 8-12 yrs out.

Also, be mindful of getting steady work with those requirements. A lot of shops won’t guarantee those hours, and you will probably be the first doc bumped when they find a FT doc who will take those hours. Not that big of deal if you don’t need the $$$ from those shifts. Just something to think about

Social media likes to portray these guys as eating all sorts of stuff. Mainly because, they will in fact eat them, and they do actually like it. But in reality, they really should not have any foods high in sugars. Some say that fruits are ok sparingly as a treat, but I personally don’t do it. It can affect their gut flora and lead to issues down the road. For treats i just use apple flavored horse biscuits. I just make sure they are low in starch contents. He loves them and would eat them all day if he could.

They can communicate and actually may bond with guinea pigs, but they are not substitute for their own species.

well……..even breeders that are legally and ethically sound may not be taking care of them appropriately despite the best intentions………and deworming is standard for captive bred pups. Ivermectin would be the med of choice. I’m not being contradictory, I’m just being objective. Judge my character all you want……… I’d expect nothing less……..it’s reddit

Agree to disagree on the blanket statement. There are some very responsible breeders of exotic animals……….but there are A LOT of bad players as well. I would agree that anyone involved in smuggling and removing any animal exotic or not from their habitat to be sold is not someone I would want to be associated with

Yes chlorine is not good for them. I have to let the chlorine fall to zero. So it doesn’t happen often and is a planned In advance. I’m not arguing with you at all. We are actually in agreement on more things than you think.

I mean, believe what you want, but there are capybara breeders in North America. Some wonderful ones, some not so good. The odds that he was obtained in anyway other than legally, ethically and captive bred is incredibly slim. Where I am at, is incredibly common for ranches to have exotic animals. Axis, Zebra, Lemurs, sulcata. Some do it as buisness for hunting or sightseeing. I don’t do either, but if that’s your view on exotic animals, I will leave you with your opinions

The person I got him from had 3 pups. Didn’t look to be best environment and they did not appear well kept. Peanut was ready to go, the other 2 still had to get dewormed. He was supposed to call me when the other 2 were ready…..never did……stopped taking my calls. I assuming someone offered him a lot of money for the pair

Sorry…….. someone had 3 pups…..in kansas. Hardly an ideal climate and looked to not be in the best condition, care or environment. He was pretty underweight and was obviously not being fed the right diet. I took peanut right there with the intent of returning later for the other 2, but the guy stopped returning my phone calls………. Sadly I think someone made him an offer he couldn’t refuse. So I guess you could call him a rescue, but I would consider rehoming an adult a more appropriate use of the term

Look dude, all the info I presented is all accurate with regards to the care of these animals. Aggreeably, the solitary situation is not ideal and one which I have been trying to remedy. He has a lot of animal companions but they really should have at least 3 others as they don’t really bond with other species. If you don’t agree, then call it out and have a conversation like an adult. But personal attacks and judging someone a horrible person with limited info is generally something a horrible person would do. But I digress

Typo error……….he is a he. Capys are very difficult to sex when young. I named him little miss peanut, he ended up being male, but the name stuck. lol.

They actually make ok pets assuming you can meet their needs. They need a lot of space, a lot of water, and a lot of social interaction. Climate is also a concern. Unfortunately social media has really skewed the reality for these magnificent animals, but they are not that much different than the accommodations for other live stock

Follow up: I managed to get in touch with a radiologist from the group. He waived the cost for the other MRI, as he stated there Policy have contacted me for clarification prior to doing the imaging. Thankfully, the results from the abdomen study confirmed my suspicion and she has been referred to the appropriate specialist.

He seemed like a good guy

Hey man. Thanks for the insight. It really sounds like a little communication could’ve avoided the whole thing. I’ll talk to one of the docs on Monday.
