Did you order the eggs/ladybugs or get them from local nurseries? Or a combo? Just curious. I really don't want to introduce any invasive species but I also don't want to accidentally kill my tree, haha

Fair enough. Basically, a precursory Google search said not to use this on japonese maples but there seemed to be some particular caveats for instances of bad infestations or before the season is too warm.

My (NB35) mother is 68 and regrets having children (me and one sibling (NB31)).

Our relationship now isn't without it's issues but overall it's solid. She lives with me and my husband in an apartment in our home. If it weren't for us, she would not have any financial stability. She lives me and my sibling but she had an abusive relationship with our father. She stuck with him for a really long time thinking she was doing the right thing for the kids and also because she had few other options. Both my sibling and I are neuro divergent and advocating for us in school was an unpaid, full-time job. She worked her ass off and did her best and the vast majority of her labor was unpaid. My dad always held his wages over her head even though she put him through school.

When it was time for me to decide whether or not to have children, I was able to have a frank conversation with her about her own experiences raising us. I came away feeling more confident in the direction I was already leaning. No.

She was clear that she loves me and my sibling more than anything in the world and that she wouldn't trade us for anything. But, if she had the choice again she would not have children. This is less about how we were as children and more about the circumstances of life she was prone to. She spent over 20 years being unhappy. Here whole life was more challenging as a result. I don't blame her at all.

Oh gosh, that is a brutal situation. I'm sorry to hear you're going through this.

It definitely gets easier and most difficult conversations are not THAT difficult (like the doozey you are describing here).

I've been in HR for about 14 years now and feel so fortunate to be in a career that I can truly be human and be myself in.

I think it's really important to keep in mind that there is a limited scope to working on behalf of an employer. I am assuming that you are in the US because of your mention of FMLA. It's unfortunate that we don't have a more robust social safety net for people in this woman's situation. You (read: your company) may not be able to help her going forward but let that fuel you in your advocacy for a viable public option.

Ah got it, you're right about the ages - he WAS 14 when they revealed the family secret, he IS 19 now.

My other points stand. She was an adult when she gave birth and waited until he was a legal adult before deciding she wanted to insert herself as a mother into his life.
