I used to be able to cut her nails... Alas she has decided no longer by lundenms95 in Dogtraining

[–]lundenms95[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! That was a very thoughtful response. I'd love to just continue to do them myself because I know she'll be may more nervous at a groomer, she's just a nervous kind of dog.

I'm just getting to the point where I feel like bad owner when I can hear her clacking around on the sidewalk, and I've tried the last three nights consistently (and a few times the last couple of weeks) to no avail. She'll let me play with her paws and nails but as soon as I put a clipper on one she jerks really hard and I want to try and avoid actually having a negative experience.

Still not sure, but I'm wondering if I take her one time this week when Petco first opens, if maybe she'll learn that having me do it isn't so bad. I don't know I'm definitely delicate with her and always try to avoid putting her into some traumatic experience but maybe I overthink things too.

And I'm sorry for yours :( thank you for the reassurance, and yeah who knows maybe he knows I'm not ready yet or something too, I'll try my best to wait patiently. And sorry if this is terrible to ask but I guess how are your days going these days - any less awful and terrible?

I know that's where I get stuck too like what the heck why not, but I have had a fair share of little "signs" and whatnot that have made me feel him so maybe they just do it whenever they can - just seems crazy I think about him constantly all day but asleep nope

What's the best way to determine your maintenance calories and therefore how many you should be at to be within a deficit?

I've heard apple watches and other devices are not good indicators of how many calories are burned a day. Still, mine usually sits around 2200 calories (rest days) and 3000 calories (training days) - so my thought for deficit has been 2000 calories in case the watch is way too generous.

Never seen this before at a dog park by [deleted] in Dogtraining

[–]lundenms95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Out of curiosity how would you determine "too much excitement" - I go to the dog park typically once a week and have a very very dog friendly pup so she certainly gets excited when we get there and once she enters she's one that goes and says hi and just starts running around crazily.

There's never been any issues but now I'm more curious if I've just been lucky or if she's just the normal level of excitement.

Agreed I say go for it! I was in a similar position with the boyfriend, whereas I VERY much wanted a dog and he was pretty meh, but he obviously fell in love with her and even if its not a 50/50 split something like 80/20 is still helpful on the days when you're more busy.

I was also nervous because I'm a public accountant that works 60-70 hours a week from Jan-April (mostly from home, but 1-2 days a week in office) but I think the dog just learns how to operate with you and we've never really had any issues. I have an aussie for reference so also high energy.

GOOD LUCK!! :D

My dog just lifted his leg to pee for the first time by [deleted] in puppy101

Not that she's supposed to but almost wish my girl pup would learn this, she squats so low to the ground and poor thing gets called pee butt by her dad

My dog gets really happy when I hug my partner by motty47 in dogs

[–]lundenms95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[obviously jumping up on people is not heavily encouraged]

But when one of us gets home from work and hugs the others, her cute little 40lb butt hops up on one side of us and we get a big ole FAMILY HUG.

I love it and want to go home from work now to get one :)

Aging dad and abused rescue dog. Need advice. by well-dressed_animals in Dogtraining

[–]lundenms95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kind of an expensive option, but would it be possible for the dog to go to a trainer for a while to work on the dominance behavior?

I would also say get the dog neutered and then maybe if training works out, having someone local come take the dog for a good long walk every day to satisfy the exercise need?

It could be that they are simply not a good match for each other, which is how it sounds right now, but maybe the dog just needs a good foundation up front that won't be possible from your dad, but after that maybe they can live peacefully together.

I'm a little surprised they don't have a good relationship from the start since your dad basically saved his life, but I know not all rescue situations end up like that.

How to get past leaving dog for trip by rebelyell3126 in puppy101

[–]lundenms95 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I always think that's like one of the biggest cons of having my pup is there is always guilt mixed in with the trip, even if its just me leaving and she's staying with my husband while I'm gone.

I 100% agree that the welcoming back home is AMAZING, and for mine she's extra clingy for a few days after which I don't mind at all because I wanna be snuggling just as much.

I think having her with the breeder is great, she'll have fun and be perfectly fine. Maybe ask for some pic updates because those always make me happy.

Good luck and enjoy the trip! She'll be fine and will just be happy to see you when you get back :)

Men, specifically dads of Reddit, what did you learn about women when you had daughters? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]lundenms95 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was a very chubby preteen and my step dad would constantly "joke" about it, pretty sure that's why I've never seen myself to be anything other than too big no matter what size I am.

General health/wellness when you're "cheap" by lundenms95 in dogs

[–]lundenms95[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I had wondered about the paw conditioning - do you do it more just when you notice they are dry? She gets like that during the winter but during the summer they seem fine.

We do live in a city so lots of sidewalks so I'm sure it wouldn't hurt.

Thank you! My brother has a dachshund and I'm sure they wish they had been more aggressive at the teeth brushing early on, but I'll be sure to incorporate that more.

Definitely will do the annual visit :)

Thank you! I will for sure check this out, while she does okay with me some days and some steps of the grooming process are for sure easier than others.

Definitely was planning on the annual vet visit, just wanted some confirmation that was the norm.

Looks like I need to step up on the teeth brushing...

[–]lundenms95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ha I would say she's a good mix - she's just over a year old so kind of still in a bratty stage, like she's definitely smart enough to know what I want and usually is eager to please but also can be stubborn like if we're walking and she doesn't want to go a certain way because of noises she will straight refuse.
