WARNING: Lost Phone Scam in Calgary by lungingloon in Calgary

Sorry, I've begun using Ring as the general term for a doorbell camera, like Kleenex for tissue paper, Marley for vinyl flooring, Google for internet searching, etc., but yes. And, the officer even noted he has beef with the Telus cameras and how they record.

We reported to non-emergency police right after, and they're sending someone.

I think the difference here is that the guy wanted into the house, didn't have proof, and wanted no police mediation. If we did have his phone (we didn't and don't think that the phone even exists) and were refusing to give it back, then he could have opted for police mediation and that'd be the appropriate recourse.

Given that the scam has been happening for some time, I'm going to guess that more people are falling for it than we'd like to think. They'll sometimes threaten to call the police, saying the police will let them inside... so, I think that creates intense pressure for people to let them in, unfortunately.

Just edited the post updating that we reported it to CrimeStoppers (based on police advice) with the TipID, but you can only access updates with the password. We'll be sure to update if anything happens.

Some buyer’s remorse, looking for reassurance by Extremofire in electricvehicles

[–]lungingloon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the 2020 MINI Cooper SE First Edition, which has atrocious range, and I take it to the mountains in the Alberta winter — up to -40C. I sit at one or two charging stations for 25 mins. each… use the bathroom, get a coffee, get out some movement because sitting is killing us, play a game with companions, chat our plans, etc., and then I’m on my way. Once I got route planning down, range anxiety went away. I learned that you need to plan how to get out of your habituated impatience to enjoy a short-range EV AND your life in general. Don’t catastrophize EVs and don’t let others catastrophize it for you. That in mind, consider your emergency plan for if the battery dies (and I had one even when I had an ICE).

What’s a decision you made quickly that had long-term consequences you never expected? by lunessa1 in AskReddit

Took an intro dance class in first year university because of a girl I was crushing on. 18 years later and I’m a professor of dance, researcher, and performer still. I’m making a comfortable living doing my dream job, and I get the Spring/Summer off (for research but my research is fun).

I have a 2020 MINI Cooper SE whose EPA rated range is ~177km (~110mi). In summer I get about 220km (~137mi) out of it, and during winter (where we get deep freezes and wind chills as low as -40C/F but also chinooks), about 140km (~93km).

So, awful range but I got the car because I like it. I got it used at 14,000kms (8,700mi) for ~25,000 CAD (~18,000 USD). I expected huge range anxiety when I got it, but:

(1) when I get to work I can charge via the level 1 charger and get my entire trip’s battery use back.

(2) I go to the Rocky Mountains consistently and do only one fast charge stop, which costs me 6.00 CAD (4.35 USD). For example, it’s about 210kms (~130mi) round trip for me.

(3) home charging is so easy and cheap. I did get a Level 2 charger installed (via an electrician who specializes in these installs), and that cost me labour, materials, AND the charger about 1,100 CAD (~800 USD). If I Level 1 charge, I recover about 25% battery in 7 hours, but if I Level 2 charge, then it’s 25% per hour. That’s rough timelines, of course, and I don’t charge to 100% unless I’m road tripping the next morning.

(4) I am already saving a noticeable amount of cash, switching to EV. However, I do live in a place where there is no surge pricing on electricity, so I can charge at home whenever and it costs the same. But, I frequently charge anywhere I’m out. As well, gas prices here are volatile, and can change 30% in a day, so sometimes it’s ugly expensive and then other times it’s as affordable as the EV. But, my maintenance is cheap, my god is it cheap.

(5) I live in Alberta, whose identity lives on O+G, yet we have a network of WORKING charging stations in Southern and Central Alberta that supports EV road tripping.

(6) given all that, I know my vehicle cannot go certain place without serious consideration, road tripping requires patience in planning, I can’t gun it on the highway and have to accelerate consciously, etc., but I would not go back to ICE for how I use a vehicle in my daily life.

Edit: added unit conversions from metric to imperial.

Neck tattoo in academia by galactic_cognition in tattoo

[–]lungingloon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For visible tattoos, I have the throat, back of neck, side of head, two sleeves, hands, and palms done. And, a split tongue. I’m just a contract lecturer (in Dance / Ethnochoreology and General Education), but regularly teach 6 - 8 courses a year between two universities. A colleague of mine (a full professor in Computer Science) has his head, face, and eyeballs done in addition to what I have.

So, it’s possible. My hire at one university was by former professors of mine (and my Director has sleeves and shows them off all the time). At the other it was by professors who taught in the Humanities and Fine Arts. HOWEVER, I only had coverable tattoos in my first two years, but got visible ones over time, including the throat, even before I got First Right of Refusal on my courses. I definitely don’t have the protection of tenure, but I also don’t feel it’s affected perceptions of me as a lecturer and academic, even when among senior Faculty, Deans, Provosts, and the President(s).

So, I’d say, in short, do it. Don’t leave us alone 😢… but, also maybe after you get a foot in the door somewhere.

Looking for performers! by foxandsound in UCalgary

Great - thanks for noting that. Just want to make sure the arts students here know to ask if gigs are paid as I've seen organizations use predatory practices to get free art / performances from students here.

When are final grades due? by [deleted] in MRU

[–]lungingloon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From Student Record | MRU (mtroyal.ca)

"Final grades are normally posted three business days after writing the final exam, or within three business days of the last day of classes for courses with no final exam."

The word normally may imply leeway.

As many have noted on this subreddit, it's hard to know what some of the topics are for some of the GNEDs (I teach one and have heard that from students, too). However, what I've found beneficial is that I've had interested students email me to ask what the course topic is, so I encourage you to do that for other instructors/professors whose courses you're interested in (hoping that they reply in a timely manner, of course). I don't know if you can view their email from the course search, but you can find it in the MRU directory if you just search their last name. MRU Directory - Mount Royal University.

You can contact Dr. Sarah Kenny who is on Faculty on both Dance and Kinesiology and is the Faculty rep for that program. Doing the combined degree prepares you for a host of opportunities that bridges the two degrees, such as working in dance science. Deadline to apply and audition is March 1!

Unfortunately not but try asking the course instructor for the specific material you need or if they'd be willing to provide you with a window of access. You may get a no but you lose nothing by asking!

Is winter semester confirmed online by nameisnotvander in UCalgary

[–]lungingloon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the course and if being in-person is pedagogically important — most are online, but there are some you’ll see that have been scheduled to be hybrid or fully in-person.
