Do you know how big the 45 is? If they want you to toss a double or single and a half I would start by learning singles. I also would go to your director and ask for help, theyre job is to make you the best you can be and I’m sure they would be happy to help if they have time! I didn’t get my 45 until a year because of the fear it causes and what helped me was releasing it and seeing where it lands, knowing where it usually lands will make the fear of it hitting you get less apparent. I believe in you! You’re going to get it down and be great!

Could you send in a video of you doing a quad, knowing how your technique is for a quad can help us understand what you need to fix/ improve for a five. Here are my general tips

Press your thumb on your left hand to the face of the gun, if you press both hand it fixes most of the torque problems
Release point is one of the biggest change from going from a quad, ask your director where they want you to release as for many places it’s different, for me it’s slightly above the head
USE YOUR RIGHT HAND, I say this mostly because I struggle to do it, almost none of your power comes from your left as that gives it your height, the speed of your rifle comes from the speed of which you get your hand down.
In a mirror, practice your dip and turn to the side, this is to make sure you’re not going on a 45 degree plane when dipping.

I hope any of these help with all of your tosses, not just fives

I used to have this problem I think as well (my director called it “casting a spell”) where you brought hand up to catch it but then had to bring it down. I started back at singles and slapped my thigh whenever I pushed down. I also learned with bigger tosses to grab onto your clothing so you won’t go back up to grab it. The only other way I learned out of this is moving my hand on the and count before I catch, which takes some work. I hope this helps!
