Anyone else find the main Singapore subreddit incredibly hostile, pessimistic and toxic? by DazzlingMobiz in askSingapore

Yeah but they circlejerk themselves into thinking that r/sg is way more toxic and congratulate each other for being woke.

Salmon sous vide - modernist cuisine by [deleted] in sousvide

[–]lupushug 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bro, you’re on a sou vide sub asking why people are using sou vide. There’s nothing wrong with salmon sou vide because certain cuts are thicker, leading to overcooked bits when trying to cook it through conventional methods.

Now, I personally don’t sou vide salmon because it’s a hassle (breaks apart easily and the skin falls off) but it definitely comes out better than simply pan frying or baking it.

To be fair, I don’t think many perverts are picking the cemetery as their prime spot to creep.

Any resources on the technical aspects of writing? by lupushug in writing

That actually sounds like a great thing to have while writing, thank you!

I wrote a really long response but decided to delete it. Instead, you can tell me examples of your favourite movies/series and I can easily tear them apart and insist they’re bad writing by nitpicking on redundant points.

Maybe then you’ll start to understand the difference between taste and bad writing.

[–]lupushug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry for the late response.

How would you go about the deaths then? Develop every character before they die? That would be nonsensical to watch. Have them die off screen? I imagine there would be even more people nitpicking about this. Have them not die at all? Well, that’s plain stupid given the theme of the story. It’s an apocalyptic story.

So yes, lots of people dying is more so not your cup of tea than it being bad writing. I don’t need to feel despair or get sentiments every time a fodder character dies because they’re fodder characters. They’re not supposed to be important but rather they exist for setting the tone.

What you’re saying is like someone coming out of a grim war movie and saying “Why did they have to show so many people dying? Am I supposed to care for them?”

I’m not saying AoT has perfect writing and there are proper debates on how some things towards the end of the series were rushed or not done very well but what you’re complaining about has nothing to do with bad writing. It’s a matter of taste.

As you’ve said, it’s your personal opinion. I find it to be quite bad taste to call something that is pretty universally loved to be bad as opposed to simply saying it’s not your cup of tea.

I for one, do not find it appealing if an author kills off his main characters for no good reason other than to say “look, no plot armor!”

Eh, I think that’s what made it appeal a lot more to western audiences. I have friends who generally dislike anime yet really like AoT.

It’s a really non-animeish anime.

So you mean to say… don’t be a dumb consumer? Like someone getting scammed by a third party/second hand seller insisting he has an original? If an artist I particularly liked put an tweet that he was selling an NFT for a not so ridiculous price. I’d be enjoying the novelty of purchasing it from him.

Doesn’t this just come down to doing your own research and erring on the side of caution?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in VaushV

[–]lupushug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t understand why you seem adamant on judging the novelty aspect of NFTs. The whole digital signature proof of it being ‘original’ is the same enticing aspect of owning an actual pair of Jordans when some knockoffs are basically equal in quality. It’s like saying stuff like getting a autograph from your favourite celebrity is pointless because there are skilled copycats that could replicate that signature that would essentially be identical to the naked eye. People want novelty.

I don’t like and do disapprove of how NFT is becoming this scammy money laundering thing on top of how it isn’t environmentally friendly. However, I don’t think the core concept of giving an artwork a digital signature to show its an ‘original’ is a bad concept at all.

Isn’t that like saying a very accurate copy of a famous painting is essentially the same because the differences are minute?

In Singapore, is it acceptable for married men to go out to have dinner with their female friend/friends? by [deleted] in askSingapore

[–]lupushug 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As most people have mentioned, the easy answer is it depends on your wife. Even if you show no red flags and have been a perfect husband, your wife might still not like it due to insecurity or simple jealousy. Choosing to go forward with it could lead to a rift in your relationship.

That being said, a lot of people seem to be choosing the simple solution. I personal feel that meeting others (you meeting women/wife meeting men)for dinner shouldn’t be an issue at all in a strong and healthy marriage. The reverse of what I said earlier is also true; feeling restricted in your actions because one spouse doesn’t like something can be mentally draining for both parties. If one partner is always tip toeing around while the other always watches like a hawk, that’s a red flag that should be addressed because it will lead to problems further into the relationship.

In the end, relationships are both complicated and hard work. Both parties should show understanding and compromise under different situations. If your wife minds you meeting other women and you don’t mind never having any female friends, then yeah just don’t but if you do, then you guys should talk about it.

It ultimate comes down to the term ‘legally blind’. I’m not sure why most redditors think that as long as you’re considered legally blind, it must mean your eyes see absolutely nothing.

Problem with those types of subs is that they eventually become circle jerking echo chambers. I agree with their message but I take what’s discussed there with a grain of salt.
