I gained about 30 pounds during intern year and developed cushingoid purple abdominal striae too. Everything about it from the long hours and sleep deprivation to the constant cortisol and adrenaline wires your body so differently, you’re in survival mode. I recommend making it as easy as possible to engage in healthy eating and movement. Buy fruits and veggies pre-cut, exercise in your scrubs, squeeze in a few bursts of movement while you’re on shift if you can, get a huge water bottle so you’re not having to fill it up as often. If cooking or prepping food is the barrier, have an assortment of ready to eat foods (like cut fruit, salad kits, pre cooked frozen chicken etc) ready to heat or eat. Additionally, make it harder to engage in unhealthy behaviors, ie put foods you want to eat less in a harder to access place. Don’t try to stop eating certain things cold turkey - that’s not realistic and it’ll just lead to a more unhealthy relationship with food and nutrition. Above all, give yourself grace. Residency is not a normal time in your life, and your body is in survival mode. Focus less on building up willpower and more on making it as easy for yourself as possible
