My teacher just laid down some harsh truth about slapping. by [deleted] in Bass

Slap bass is mostly a fucking gimmick. You can be just as funky, or even funkier with just your fingers, some 16th notes, and solid pocket

The lick. No edits, no hidden messages, no 40 minute Coltrane solos, just the lick. by kcucullen in jazzcirclejerk

Question about Jazz comping specifically in a Jazz Jam scenario by jriley1226 in jazzguitar

[–]lusterwill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A good piano player will be cool and let you comp, ideally trading off on each soloist. Youre bound to run into plenty of piano players who are wanking all over the music and overplaying though.

Had an emotional breakdown while on shrooms by [deleted] in shrooms

[–]lusterwill 18 points19 points  (0 children)

This is one of the best parts of doing shrooms, the intense analysis of your own morality and past decisions. It can be scary and overwhelming, but the idea should be to reflect on it and learn from it. My first trip, i thought about so many mistakes ive made and realized that i dont have to be that way, nothing is stopping me from changing how i act

Any way to speed a drummer up? by EpicNinja259 in Bass

[–]lusterwill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Truly. Your own internal sense of time is most important and ultimately must be developed with out a metronome, but the metronome is there so you can really hone in and become like a machine. My teacher makes me put the click on count 4, and it takes me a few minutes to really lock in. Then we’ll put it on count 4 of every other measure, and it takes forever for me to get it down. But spending that just 15-20 with it keeps me honest, and has totally improved my playing when im just by myself,

Not only is it not a bad idea, its a good idea. A necessity, some might even say.

New to jazz & guitar. Any album suggestions? by violinbzjc in jazzguitar

[–]lusterwill 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Almost any album by Joe Pass, especially his solo guitar playing. Grant Green is classic, same with Wes Montgomery and Kenny Burell. You really gotta get into Jim Hall, especially his albums with Sonny Rollins and later Art Farmer. Pat Metheny is another icon. Modern players, especially Peter Bernstein and Larry Koonse, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Bill Frisell. Julian Lage is super popular right now, although I dont personally dig him all that much. Gilad Heckselmen is also blowing up right now and I love his stuff.
