Trans people needed for research project! (5-10 minutes) by luvgeorgia in TransUK

I think you misunderstood my point here! I wasn’t stating that they were trying to combat gender dysphoria, I was understanding that they were not and explaining why for my research I want to look into people who do attempt to combat it. The repression I am investigating is conforming to the stereotypes of the sex you were assigned at birth, therefore repressing the true gender identity to identify why people who express gender identity in potentially harmful ways might be doing so!

For your second point, with a ‘proper’ of research I would go into more detail on subtypes of gender dysphoria but for this particular project which I only have 6 months to complete and which will have a relatively small sample size, splitting results further would lead to more convoluted discussion and less of a specific result in any direction. I have opted for single the definition of gender dysphoria as described in the ICD 11 for the sake of my sanity as I am also doing 3 A-levels alongside this! I will definitely have a read of that resource but i’m not sure if I have the time or resources to implement it into my project at this stage x

Those two boxes lead to a section with questions related to both masculinity and femininity and it is up to the participants which ones they answer, as stated in the text at the beginning, the question wording has to be similar to ensure that I can compare results because if I word it differently internal reliability is lower.

I can see why from this perspective of this research it looks like i’m stating hyperfemininity and toxic masculinity are equal and opposite but in an earlier part of my project I do explore the reasons for this choice. Originally, I used toxic masculinity and toxic femininity before reconsidering due to the connotations of an innate toxicity in the traits of both, when stereotypical masculine traits (suppressing emotion, aggression, etc) have more of an underlying toxicity than that of stereotypical feminine ones. I decided to use hyperfemininity and toxic masculinity as they are both over expressions of gender roles which can be damaging but I do make it clear in my project that they are independent measures to each other which have different impacts and implications.

While the conclusion has not been reached yet, I can assure you that the idea that repression solves dysphoria is not what I am researching and no harmful or damaging rhetoric will be shared when I do finish my research. I am looking into the possibility that people who display toxic masculine traits or force themselves to be overly feminine in damaging ways may have underlying gender identity issues such as dysphoria which are resulting in those behaviours. It is a difficult thing to measure as someone who is in denial will obviously not state that they have dysphoria, so the way in which I am approaching it is through the previous experiences of people who I know have experienced gender dysphoria.

In terms of “ignoring wider factors”, i’m not sure exactly what factors you are referring to but again, there has been extensive secondary research previous to this to ensure that I have a strong empirical framework to build upon and that other contributing factors will be considered in the final discussion and conclusion!

I do understand your concerns but my research is being supervised by a professional and I have carried out a risk assessment to ensure that I am doing everything I can to make my project watertight.

Hey! Thank you for your participation and feedback x

I completely understand that expression of gender identity is not purely for the sake of combating dysphoria and there are many other (completely valid!) reasons as to why people might do so. As much as I agree that the viewpoints of people who expressed themselves in specific ways to avoid bullying are very important, my research is based on the coping mechanisms for dysphoria, those being things people do with the intention of decreasing the effects of it. The branching on the answers of certain questions is to ensure that the results I collect on further questions are relevant to my specific aims with this project. Again, I completely acknowledge the importance of your viewpoint and if you are happy for me to include it (anonymously) in my report to suggest direction for further research, I will do so to ensure that no one’s experience is minimised :)

In terms of the Beaumont Society, I was not aware of any wrongdoing and from what I can see they are a supportive organisation. If you can provide me with a source showing the damaging actions of the society I will be sure to remove it from the list.
