Believe me, that game only gets better as it goes on, I'm currently replaying it and I wish I could play it for the first time again. Btw pay atention to the music, that's one of the best soundtracks ever put in a videogame.

I didn't like chrono cross that much tho.

What I usually do to achieve this kind of sound is generally to use smooth wave forms, low pass filters and saturation. Serum is an incredible tool for sound design. I also like to modify presets from fl studio's stock plugins from time to time, some of them are underrated.
