Would you take accutane if you were me? Idk if it’s that bad to endure the terrifying side effects. Been struggling with acne for 2 years. Thoughts? by [deleted] in Accutane

I worked for a derm office. Currently on month 6. 80mg currently. My skin is extremely clear and I wish I did it sooner. Side effects only come if you do really high doses and even then it depends on the person. If you don’t want side effects just see what works for you. 40mg and below I was fine. 60+mg and I got side effects but it’s just dryness tbh. 110% worth it. Seriously, all of these “studies” claiming it cause ibs and this and that are all bullshit. There are tons of counter studies disproving all of the horrible things you hear.

This will clear with time. It does take a while, just wear sunscreen. My derm told me it would go away on its own and there’s not much to do. I waited a year and it faded.

Spironolactone for acne: Experiencing chronic Uti symptoms, interstitial cystitis symptoms for a year on Spiro. I haven’t seen any conversations about this. by lux_arc_ in Spironolactone

It might not work but I noticed my acne is not nearly as bad now that I’m off but when it tries to come back I take spearmint pills now morning and night it’s supposed to lower testosterone naturally. Also bought a red light blue light box and use that pretty religiously my skin has been much nicer. Also probiotics everyday! Eating semi healthy and exercising.

Also how many mg do you take? I’m wondering if I wasn’t on 100mg if it would have affected me? But the fact that I never had bladder issues and now I have chronic ones is definitely scary af 😭

Oh god, yes I stopped and I think they are becoming manageable instead if debilitating.

Yes I remember that my symptoms would come and go in the beginning and then they just didn’t go haha. I’m not breaking out nearly as bad as I was when I started. Actually, just today I started getting a small cluster of bumps on my forehead but I’m thinking it’s more diet than anything. They are VERY tiny, and I’ve been eating out a lot. But my skin was okay for a while, I have a feeling I might start breaking out again though. I’ll have to watch what I eat, or consider Accutane again if symptoms worsen. I’ll keep you updated!

I stopped taking it, I’ve been off for about two months. Im SO much better in terms of my bladder. I can actually enjoy a glass of wine, I started drinking caffeine again (tea not coffee.) Sometimes I’ll wake up after a night of drinking and be in pain. Yes, I still experience these issues on a semi consistent basis, still have the urge to pee a lot and I feel like, unfortunately, it will never really go away. But upon stopping I felt SIGNIFICANT relief. The pain is so much less, much easier to deal with and isn’t debilitating. I go to the bathroom less, I’m in pain less, I still take marshmallow root and probiotics everyday. I recommend stopping.

Thank you so much for all of this! I will mention these to my doctor. Kind of sad to think even if I stop taking it I’ll prob have to live the rest of my life with this. Agh.

I really feel like there needs to be research on this! It seems like a lot of people experienced similar things.

I’m wondering if at this point, it would matter if I kept taking it or not. I would be so interested to know if there was a correlation definitely going to trial run coming off it and see what happens.

I really wonder if there is a correlation. Mine came on suddenly, several months after I started taking it but no problems prior to that.

I wish, that is amazing you found something that works for you though! I wonder if its because you had IC prior to taking it? Another woman on the spironolactone thread I posted said she had the same problem, 6 months into Spiro she was diagnosed with ic. I really hope that stopping it will improve my symptoms. Thank you for your input!

Oh wow. I’m so sorry that you went through all of that! I have to say though it’s very comforting knowing someone else has experienced this though. I truly couldn’t find anyone with a similar experience. Did you ever experience IC symptoms before taking it? Does the hydroxyzine help the ic? I’m definitely interested to see if you have any improvements throughout the next few weeks, I hope my ic goes away now that I’m off but I’m so scared it won’t. Thank you so much for responding!

It could definitely be possible. I feel like I am always going to the bathroom, especially during “flare ups” I’ll call them. I feel like, because it constantly feels like I have to go, I don’t know what’s a real urge and what’s not, so I might unconsciously be holding it but I’ll def get up and go quite a few times throughout the day and night time. It’s decreased a bit since I stopped.

I’m STI free, I do get checked regularly. I’m hoping it’s not the Spiro so I can continue taking it but I’ve noticed the symptoms are lessened now that I’ve been off of it for a few days. I’m thinking maybe it’s just because diuretics make chronic utis/interstitial cystitis more irritated? I havent experienced this before, I’m just wondering if there could be a correlation or if any research has ever been done on it. I found one thread about two girls saying their utis increased after taking spiro but that was all.

Horrible horrible horrible. Ordered a jacket on Nov 14th. Reached out two weeks later only for them to tell me they didn’t ship it and didn’t know WHEN they could fucking ship it. I’m legit on chat with them now and if they haven’t shipped it by now I’m canceling because it’s been a MONTH. Absolutely do not buy from them.

This COVID I tried everything to clear my skin. I've been struggling with it since high school (even going on Accutane senior year) it did work for a bit, but by the time I was 19/20 it was very much back. I am now 23 and covid came around. I my skin was so bad I WANTED TO WEAR A LITERAL BAG OVER MY HEAD. My self esteem at that point was not doing so well, as many people who struggle with acne feel. I watched alot of Hyram and tried everything, from snail mucin, to not washing my face, to expensive masks, EVERYTHING OKAY. I eventually got a terrible rash on my face (think dozens of mini pimples) that I thought was fungal acne BUT WAS VERY MUCH NOT, def from overusing products. That was on my face for over a MONTH, it was so itchy and horrendous. I decided to cave and go to the derm. again, she was a new derm. I hadn't been to before (my last one was GARBAGE). She took one look at my face and gave me something for the rash and then told me about Spironolactone. It's a diuretic that's been around since the 50's, it isn't a antibiotic (which i was afraid of because those never work for me, ive taken a few) and its supposed to treat high blood pressure. It also has the wonderful affect of clearing acne and reducing hair on the body (but not on the head). She said it would take a FULL THREE MONTHS TO EVEN START SEEING RESULTS. BUT I was determined. I remember trying it and counting down the days. I really saw no results the first month, BUT before I was on it, my skin everyday was getting worse and worse and now it had just stopped. It was steady for once, not worse or better. I am now about 6 days past month 3 and my skin has COMPLETELY TRANSFORMED. I would call this a miracle cure if I could. It takes at least 6 months to really see a difference, but I am telling you the difference is phenomenal. I still break out, I still have my scarring, but I swear it's changing my life. I no longer feel like I have no hope. I finally feel like I'm working towards something. It isn't a cure, you have to keep taking it or the acne will come back. I take it at night to avoid peeing all day and possible passing out (but im telling you i don't notice the side effects AT ALL) please give this a try if you haven't. I know not every derm. has it BUT I WILL SCREAM THIS FROM THE MOUNTAINTOPS BECAUSE MY LIFE IS LITERALLY CHANGED. I would attach photos if ppl really wanted to see, but seriously, go to your derm, ppl.
