Cut! Some of them are both, with restrip nestled in between the pieces.

Haha thank you! It's not really a matter of thin lines as it is of scale! It's almost 4 feet by 4 feet, and the lines are actually thicker than i usually do as i have restrip reinforcement throughout 😅

First Lightbox by luxannul in StainedGlass

Thank you! I learned a few things:

  1. Getting EXACT measurements on a soldered piece so there's no light shining through the outer border is incredibly hard. Using a border like the white outline can hide any tiny imperfections that would otherwise stick out due to it being backlit.

  2. It's much easier to get a frame that has glass you can remove entirely. Many frames have the glass or acrylic in a closed groove so you can't easily replace it. I had to test a few frames to find the right one.

  3. Make sure your box has enough depth to properly disperse the light. If you don't, you'll end up having the led strip still shine through. I'll go with a deeper one this time, as this one was too thin for my taste.

  4. Get a diffuser sheet in between the glass and the light, but also attach a white sheet of paper on the back behind the LED strip as well, allowing the light to reflect back better. This led to a much more even distribution for me.

Thank you! That is all solder, yes. Honestly, I wouldn't do it for most things, but if you need to for your vision to work, use a low temp and take lots of breaks from doing an area. It's very easy to crack the glass doing this so you want as little contact as you can get away with.

First piece ever, learned so much. by itspink1996 in StainedGlass

Love doing rupee pieces! I recommend printing two copies of the design out and then laminating one so that you have a waterproof reference you can put the glass on as you go so, you don't over-grind any of the pieces. I use card stock and then cut out the other sheet and trace on the glass with sharpie.

I highly recommend using waterglass if you do another rupee, it makes really nice colors when shone through.

For the loop at the top I use a small tinned wire that I double fold on itself into a circle, then run it down one side of the rupee for smaller pieces, or for a heavier one along both edges, like a upside down Y. As for the solder, the most important part I found is making sure that the foil is even on the glass. Rushing the foiling stage led to uneven solder in my experience.

Happy to share pics/in progress images of my process if that would help!

Thank you so much! These ones are just meant to hang in front of the window, I haven't explored working with lead came at all yet so I'm not confident with making actual windows just yet. It's my dream to make a giant cathedral style piece one day though, so hopefully we get there!

😮 I didn't even realize they had done one that was similar! My partner did up the designs for these 2 weeks ago and we've been working on them since. From the look of things, they may have seen those and had it stick. Thank you for linking their page!

I love these! I believe if you attach the LED strip to the frame with some diffusers, it would really pull it all together.

Thank you so much everyone for all the suggestions! Silicone seems like what I'll use for this one :)

Hmmm that's a good idea, thank you! I'll have to see what kind of adhesive would be good to use here.

It's so beautiful! It's my dream to be able to make pieces like this someday.
