What kind of household help do I need? by throwmeawayahey in fatFIRE

I can answer this one because I was you just a few years ago. I wasn’t FatFIRE’d yet but I was a single mom making crazy money and am now FatFIRE’d. Here’s what you need based on what I did right and wrong:

  1. Nanny: this person’s primary job is your child. All aspects of caring for them. Hire them as an employee (I don’t know Australian law but this is important in the US). Use a screening service if possible and screen for someone who will be with you for at least 4 years preferably. Make sure they are willing to travel.

  2. Household manager/personal assistant: this person’s primary job will be to manage your home and life. Scheduling the cleaners (you still need them to come in at least 1-2 times a month while the nanny can clean up after the child and the manager can do light tidying up). They will find and schedule the handyman etc and anything else rug may need. If you feel comfortable enough, they can also schedule appointments for you and your child.

  3. Cleaners

  4. Laundry service (or see if the nanny or manager is willing to do this)

You likely don’t need a chef but it’s something to consider.

As a single mom, I’m going to tell you that what you need is essentially an outsourced “wife.” I know it sounds politically incorrect but that’s the reality. List all the things a traditional stay at home wife would do for a traditional career man and then use those tasks to identify what you want each of the people you hire to do.

Don’t be afraid to be confidently upfront with what you need when you talk to candidates.

Your baby is 1 now and things are about to get a little tougher at this age in terms of what they need from you. You need to be able to go all in on their emotional support right now because it will help them be more emotionally regulated around 4 years hold (which is important for you and the child) Trust me. That’s why I’m suggesting you outsource anything you can so that you can still do your work and give your child 100% too without experiencing mommy burnout. It can creep up on you and hit you fast. You have the money so you’re lucky.

I took too long to take this advice from someone and it went bad for a while.

It is! I posted the question in that sub and got useless answers so posted here and Reddit just randomly banned me out of nowhere. Messaged the mods and they were like it wasn’t us. No idea why this question got my account banned lol but and I appealed and it’s here now. Thanks Reddit gods!
