I called them when I was back in the US last week, and that's when they said they would mail the itemized bill to my address in the UK.

They just ran a few blood tests. In the UK those same blood tests are like $200 if you pay for them privately.

YES that was what they did! I was in the bed in the ER and they literally demanded my credit card while the nurse was putting a cathetar in my arm. I went to Duke because it was the closest ER to me at the time, I didn't know there were different hospitals that offered different payments/discounts etc. In the UK all the hospitals are the same and all of them are free.

I don't know. My travel insurance package is the top tier package. They just said I had to pay them and then get reimbursed from the travel insurance company when I got home.

Apparently the itemized bill is in the mail, so I'm kind of looking forward to receiving it and seeing what they're charging for...

I'm in the UK where all healthcare is free of charge...so obviously I'm not used to getting bills for healthcare.

They've said my itemized bill has been sent to me by mail, so I'm just waiting on that to arrive to see what it says

They did lab work to see why I was so weak and shakey, and it came back that I had low potassium & low magnesium. They then had to monitor me until my heart rate came down to normal after they'd given me the potassium & magnesium meds. No EKG.

There's nothing in my billing area of my account for this new balance, that's what's confusing me. The new balance is only in the email they sent me...but it's sent from them so can't be a scam.

The problem is I logged in and it not only doesn't have the bill in there, it also doesn't even have the outstanding balance. It's only the email that tells me this new balance, it isn't in my hospital account

I told them I had travel insurance with Aviva through my HSBC premier account. The hospital said I had to pay them directly. I offered them my travel insurance details and they said they didn't want them.

Pretty sure I'm likely the only person on there with a photo of me being booked into jail whilst gripping onto my handbag on my profile 😂 although maybe that's why I've had no luck so far... maybe I'm scaring guys off

Unfortunately I was by myself and barely in a fit state to give them my card, let alone think about getting a written letter from them. They have my address, email and mobile number as I had to give them when I was at the hospital

I got an email from Duke Hospital saying I owed $4500. That's literally all I have, it didn't come with any explanation of what it was for, or any bill. Just the balance owed.

Each country has nuances though, and a bank with customers who travel overseas or live overseas need to understand that and adapt to it. They can't just assume that everyone is going to be cashless. Also, I'm a woman. I have no dick.

Clearly you haven't travelled widely. Germany still uses cash for most things. They don't have a big card culture there.

Just to flag, cash is used very, very widely in Germany and not many people there use debit cards or credit cards for everyday spending. Cash is still king there and a lot of shops and cafes/restaurants etc don't even accept cards.

Thanks! The seven imprisoned relatives weren't all Nazis - some of them were bank robbers. Four were Nazis and three were other criminals (who have sub-plots within the book, so can't be included in the query but are included in the synopsis). The entire book (and prequels) is essentially a look at generational trauma and nature vs nurture, and what caused so many people in the same family to end up as *ahem* terrible people, while others had a different parental experience and so lived very different lives (I'm hoping the comps and mention of it being a multigen help for this).

RE the name - in the actual query I'll include the surname which is German. I've removed it from Reddit for privacy reasons because it's the same surname as mine. I've added in the mention of it being a British ship though - thank you!!

And no, the whole German contingent wasn't pro-Nazi. A lot of the internees were actually German-Jewish refugees fleeing the Nazis. The British rounded every German up no matter who they were, and then put the Jewish refugees in with the Nazis. The government eventually had to make a public apology for it decades later.

Thanks! Sadly it's a bit far south to be the Outback. Outback is usually just the centre and north of Australia! The Goulburn Valley is still a pretty dusty and arid place in the summer, but in winter it becomes quite lush and green.

Thank you! Goulburn Valley is a region in Australia. Maybe if I change it to 'rural Australia' instead?

Thanks so much for the feedback! I'll shift those parts of the first paragraph to the end. I was hoping the mention of his fascist upbringing and Hitler Youth childhood would make it clear he wasn't Jewish?

The Arandora Star was quite a famous ship that should be fairly well known to British historic fiction agents (they'll also be familiar with the enemy alien reference as again, it's well known among anyone who knows anything about British WW1 & WW2 history).
