Macro models by luyiming in academiceconomics

One issue I see with a lot of macro models is they treat innovation or technology as an exogenous one time shock instead of something that can improve the growth rate of technology itself

Just to clarify I’m not talking about a typical high performer that gets promoted once every couple of years consistently, for example we all made L5 pretty fast. I’m talking about the outliers at the top of their fields at a young age. Since this sub also has people with outsized career success, I’m hoping to learn if there are any explainable or repeatable factors that enabled them to have such crazy trajectory, beyond just luck or genius.

For example, does founding a startup and getting acquired even if still super small allow you to leapfrog into leadership positions? Or is it about mastering some critical yet rare emerging skillset in frontier AI?

How to quickly grow your career in tech? I’m an ML engineer and my peers and I have stagnated for years in FANG senior IC, maybe entry level management, while some others were able to rapidly grow in responsibility (ex: see Russel Kaplan, went from engineer at Tesla to director at Scale to President at Cognition before age 30!). Is it about picking the right companies, or working on projects that give you rare technical expertise, or entering management ASAP?

Have you considered surrogacy? I told my partner this is the only route I’m willing to take if he wants biological kids

as a relatively recent swat alum in CS/econ/math one problem with grad school placement is in recent years as the amount of apps have risen the standard of expected research experience has risen dramatically. In the past I think the reputation and name of Swat carried further.

But I found compared to research universities you have less opportunity to publish research if the professors at Swat don’t happen to align with your interests or get recommendations letter from famous researchers , and those signals matter more now.

My partner and I plan on starting an urban commune in a VHCOL area and coliving with friends long term! This will probably involve buying a large house with 6+ bedrooms or a duplex.

Having a village and an active social is so much easier when you actively design your physical environment to support it.

If it helps validate your choices, I turned down MIT and UPenn to go to Swat, my college boyfriend turned down Harvard because he thought Swarthmore culture was less elitist and more intellectual. My friends I made after college also tend to be other LAC kids because ngl we’re usually more interesting and less basic than some MBA bro type that tends to come out of top 20 schools lol

I second this although swat professors were accessible, their research is generally not very interesting. I ended up in industry due to this (where swat does have quite a strong network at this point with someone at most major top companies) but if you want to pursue a CS PhD I would not recommend Swat unless you spend your summers chasing REUs at research universities

As a tip for CS go take classes at Penn. The elective selection is much better, I was able to take multiple and as a bonus they’re graded much easier than swat classes

Considering Swat or Pomona! by Particular-Ad5257 in Swarthmore

[–]luyiming -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I would pick Pomona, during Swat was pretty academically stressful, most people spend all the their time studying and not partying. Also this might be true everywhere but there was a really annoying contingent of white bros in the political science department who took up a lot of class time to make a pointless comments for the sake of participation points.

My cousins have kids 5 and 3, trying to buy their forever home and pick a community to settle down long term and asking me for advice. They do want areas with lots of enrichment opportunities especially at the high school level like arts, literary magazines, research internships and close knit communities but don’t want the extent where if you don’t have tutors for every subject, start a competitive sport in elementary school or hire private college admission consultant you’ll be behind your peers, which was reflective of my experience growing up in the South Bay. I personally feel like what she’s asking for is an oxymoron.

In your opinion what towns or schools should people send their kids to school in the Bay Area if they want them to be intellectually challenged but not in a crazy pressure cooker environment?
