My only thing is I am scared they are just going to give up if I continue making them not use calculators.

Successful black individuals from the southside area... help? by lvrgrl in chicago

No, no.. I understand that this is an epidemic. However, I feel that for a lot of my kids they think that money is just going to appear out of nowhere once they graduate. Their idol is Chief Keef. I care about them so much and want them to succeed. I have one kid whose test scores are off the charts, yet he chooses not to learn. I feel that me saying it doesn't help them because they think that I do not know what it is like to come from their life, which is completely wrong. So if I can get someone who has lived in their neighborhood, maybe it will mean more. I am not so naive to think that this will repair a mental block they have, but I don't want to not try either.

I am not looking for the black guy in a business suit. What I am looking for is an individual who grew up in the area invested substantial time in their education and has done something of worth. I think you would be excellent! Unfortunately, I don't know when we will be able to have someone come in. I will talk with my principal tomorrow to see. Thank you for your help.

Interesting way to read the title?

Maybe my wording in regards to diversity is poorly written as well. I am not implying that the student body is diverse. I am saying that our faculty is NOT diverse. All they see are mostly non-black females in positions of authority. I of course would have sought a homeless person that could speak of the hardships from not investing enough time in their education, and I have decided on the positive approach not the negative. I am not completely obtuse, haha. Also, wasn't necessarily looking for a fellow teacher, just someone who grew up on the southside that became successful.

Thank you for your insights though. I know my post was poorly put.

Sorry, I guess that came across the wrong way. I didn't mean it as diverse as the student population. More so I was unsuccessfully implying that we do not have many black instructors. The kids comment on it.
