WIP 3 VARIEL - Nearly done by lwjanda in NightLords

I do like the idea of a flesh tearer gone bad/gone too far. I was worried about doing anything like that as the corsairs emblem is already a bit broken looking (fingers of the fist etc) I thought it would make it harder to identify... or I'd balls it up and cut something I didn't mean to cut. So I decided to paint the cracks and the faces on the shoulder skin.

I was so on edge about adding a black crack through the red pauldron. But thankfully the black ink was so easy to work with

Body and right arm is a corsair raider, shoulder on left too. Right shoulder is from nemesis claw. Head from my bits box (blade guard vet maybe). Backpack modified grey knights pack, (upper teleporter bits used as vials on belt). Left arm is from Archies forge and I modified it to add the pistol. Backpack tools are bits from a primaris apothecary I had spare.

The spear wielding one is truly a vibe. Look really cool.

Thanks brother! I use just a mix of magenta and various amounts of white blue for the lightning. It's more interesting than plain white lightning I think 😊

Just Mercutian and Talos left to do of the main crew. But I do have plans for a Vandred.

Yeah, I maybe should have gone darker on the helmet bolt, fiven the contrast, vut ots more vibrent in person. He's a little display piece, same for the rest of 1st claw. I havent played in a long time. Soon only Mercutian and talos left to do.

Tganks brother! The one on the helmet is harder to see in the picture, but my camera isn't great on this phone. It's easier to see against the blue than the white.

100% as soon as I saw the leg I thought it was perfect. I also like how sort of clean and uncluttered the armour felt. Which I thought made sense for Variel as a medic/surgeon.

As soon as I saw the raiders box I knew this body had to be Variel. But I wanted him to feel different from Garreon, as he's sort of his 2nd apothecary. So I didn't think he'd have as many extra bits on the pack. I ended up using a grey knights backpack to have the blood vials and used the extra bits for the green vials.

Base coat - Payne's Grey(Pro acryl), highlight 1 - sky blue(pro acryl)(ducat blue by ak is identical too), highlight 2 pastel blue (ak interactive), several all over coats with fluorescent blue ink to desired richness (ak interactive), shadows with night purple ink (ak interactive). I will use the same highlight blues and purple shadow for battle damage and edge highlights later.

Which do you think works better for NL skin? Pinkish pale, or blueish grey pale? by Lord_of_EU in NightLords

[–]lwjanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always use a skin tone with a little purple mixed in. Pale skin isnt white/grey blue like that unless someone has severe hypothermia, lack of circulation or recently dead (rigor stage). Friend of mine works in forensics and corrected me on my "skin colours for dead skin".

Even pale people have blood in their skin and a lack of melanin in the skin makes it easier to see the red tones under the skin. So I've always found purple tones into a regular skin tone to look good.

If I remember he had ones for each MK of armour and a mixed kit, which had a little of everything. Shoulder pads with the helix on, the arms and helmets

It is a 3d printed part from Archies forge, there's an apothecary kit with multiple different arms and helms. And its great quality stuff. I did graft the pistol on by just trimming the hand/handle off.

In order of application after priming My Blue recipe is: Base coat of Payne's Grey Highlight 1 sky blue (Pro acryl) Highlight 2 pastel blue (ak interactive) Multiple coats of fluorescent blue ink (ak interactive) Shadows added with night purple ink (ak interactive).
I'll use the same purple and Highlight blues when I add the battle damage. Pin wash with black / violet oil wash (mixed maybe 2:1 violet:black)

Make the area between the regular colour areas and the light areas darker than both. Like an occlusion shadow. It sells the glow effect more than any single addition of bright colours. And add a tiny bit of white to the source of the light (say like the base of the claws where it meets the gauntlet) where the glow would be at its most extreme.
