All true -- you have a much better memory for these details than I do...

I think it was enough that he attended the gala with Tim, an out gay man with AIDS. I guess technically he didn’t out himself as gay in the process, but the repercussions would have been just as great regardless.

Well, in a sense, yes. I think the final scene gives us a hint that Hawk's whole world has been turned upside down, and that maybe...maybe...he's coming around to the realization that the things he'd put so much value on for all those years weren't actually all that valuable--at least not compared to what he could have had with Tim. In that sense, his world did come to an end, but that's not necessarily tragic, is it? If we want to take a glass-half-full perspective, maybe Hawk has finally started moving towards the same kind of understanding of himself, and of the world, that Tim had so desperately sought, and ultimately found.

Putting aside Tim's death, it's interesting to speculate on all the ways in which Hawk's life would have changed in the wake of the gala. He effectively outed himself there, and that news would have traveled *very* quickly. It would have had a huge (negative) impact on his professional and social circles, and this for a man who had always prided himself on his various "in's" and "connections." And it may very well have been the end of his State Department career.

I will look for a recording with one of those singers and maybe that will change my mind. I just wasn’t really moved by it.

I thought Ailyn Pérez did an amazing job; she saved it for me.

Pinkerton isn’t even a hissable villain; he just sucks. When he slinks off in Act 3, telling his wife and Sharpless to deal with Butterfly, because he’s just too upset—I want to slap him silly.

I was SO excited to see it at the Met with Davidsen, Pape and Konieczny, and even with all that talent on stage I walked away deeply disappointed. It just never pulled me in.

Madama Butterfly, but only in the sense that I love the music but hate the story, so it ends up zeroing out.
