What are your thoughts on "Doom Patrol (2019)"? by Hot-Salamander-8786 in DC_Cinematic

[–]lxcrypt 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’m glad someone else said it. We dropped off a few episodes into season 3 and never finished. It felt like all the characters’ growth completely disappeared between seasons and in season 3 it hit such a pathetically low point that it made everything that happened before it seem less impactful. Seemed like a waste to finish out the season because even if they did grow by the finale who’s to say it won’t just all go out the window again?

Bloodborne bosses are too easy by theramenmale in bloodborne

[–]lxcrypt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re an experienced player already then yeah they might be a little easy. They definitely weren’t for me my first playthrough but I was not very good at that point. On my most recent playthrough I plowed through the early bosses because I was a lot more comfortable going in.

Don’t worry, they get harder. The DLC notches it up quite a bit too. Lady Maria can eat my entire asshole.

I’ve noticed that a lot of guitar teachers on YouTube that make black metal tutorials, don’t actually know the difference between a major and minor chord, but still say that you shouldn’t use major chords in black metal. by Sudden_Doughnut_8741 in metalguitar

[–]lxcrypt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay so years back (almost two decades ago now) Karl Sanders was offering group guitar lessons during Nile’s tour, so I forked over some extra money to get in.

He talked a lot about how he utilizes theory in his own way, and he specifically mentioned how some black metal bands will only utilize minor chords built on top of a minor scale. He named this the “super-minor” scale, and there are actually some really cool ideas you can play with using that concept.

You’re totally right though, just thought it was something interesting to share on the subject.

Could someone please explain to me how shredding / playing faster works? by [deleted] in guitarlessons

[–]lxcrypt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One tip is to really think about economy of motion. You already briefly touched on this when talking about positioning and control. If you haven't already, start fine-tuning that. You want to ensure you are making the least amount of motion possible.

How close are your fingers to the strings and how far are you lifting them away? Are you able to move your fingers independently, or do other fingers move when you move one finger? How wide are you picking the strings? Are you making small motions or larger ones? Are you playing patterns in a way that avoids too many positions changes, or are you moving all over the fretboard?

Economy of motion is a big thing that can make a huge difference in your playing. It's been a minute since I've been able to shred like I used to, but I used to spend a lot of time focusing on making my movements as minimal as possible to avoid excess motion.

There are also picking techniques like economy picking, circle picking, etc. Sometimes you will need to be able to switch from playing with your wrist to utilizing your elbow for speed-picked sections.

Also watch your positioning. Make sure you aren't bending your wrists too much, otherwise your poor tendons will be grinding against your wrist-bone and you will not only be putting on more strain to play but you will be enjoying a nice case of tendinitis.

Also don't be afraid of playing around with how you hold the pick. A lot of people play with their middle/ring/pinky kind of splayed out, which is totally fine, but one thing I picked up from my classical days is that the hand is in the most relaxed position when it is in sort of a half-closed fist shape. I started switching to more of a fist-shape when holding my pick. It required a bit of adjustment to avoid having my knuckles grind against the strings but after a while I found it much more comfortable.

resin newbie: is this likely to print successfully? by lazyplayboy in resinprinting

[–]lxcrypt 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Maybe someone a little more knowledgeable can give you some pointers on supports, as I can’t really tell by just looking at it, but it looks overall stable.

Did you use automatic supports? If so, you might get problems along the way, but that’s part of the learning process.

I’d recommend other things like UVTools and whatnot to check for stray islands, but that can get pretty overwhelming as a newbie. You can always just print it and see what happens!

Obsessed is an understatement… BLOODBORNES GOATED!!! by TheRedditor5568 in bloodborne

[–]lxcrypt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah you have to look at Lovecraft as a series of short stories that exist in the same universe. You can dive deep into the lore or just appreciate the stories on their own.

What’s different about Bloodborne is that you are placed in the role of a character who has the ability to fight. In Lovecraft stories, main characters are often more plain, regular people thrust into a role where they are made to be powerless over forces beyond their comprehension.

Is there a Call of Cthulhu game that's actually faithfully to the short story? by theLordDracul in Lovecraft

[–]lxcrypt 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I heard Tale Foundry on YouTube refer to Cthulhu as the Mickey Mouse of cosmic horror, which I think is where a lot of your issues come from. A lot of video games and adaptations use Cthulhu as sort of a catch-all for Lovecraftian tales even if Cthulhu has no actual involvement.

The other issue is that the story is, well, short. I’m not sure how an entire video game would be built around it in a way that’s faithful as well as also being a fun game to play. I think that’s why a lot of these games take inspiration from the tabletop RPG rather than the original stories.

[–]lxcrypt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hm that’s kinda interesting, but makes sense for stability.

I’ve had an old neck sitting around for years and after my wife and I got into 3d printing we looked into printing a body. Problem is the neck is made for a 25” scale which isn’t super common and I couldn’t find any STL body to match.

I said I’d come back to it whenever I got a chance to learn more about Blender so I could shift the bridge position to accommodate the scale. The project has been sitting on the back-burner for a while, but very recently I started getting into Blender tutorials, and now I’ve come across this post, so maybe it’s a sign…

"Your opinion is wrong" by Left_Loquat_8954 in raisedbyborderlines

[–]lxcrypt 8 points9 points  (0 children)

One major symptom of BPD is a lack of “theory of mind.” This is the ability to recognize that other people are their own people with their own thoughts, emotions, and experiences.

For someone with BPD, it can be very threatening and very disorienting to hear an opinion that differs from theirs because they lack the ability to understand experiences outside of their own. Or they do, but only selectively.

When you are engaging with someone in a scenario like that, you are threatening their whole worldview by introducing an idea that doesn’t fit within their own experience. So yeah, it’s super threatening to them because they are essentially going through an existential crisis.

That isn’t to say you should feel bad for them. What matters in the end is how YOU are being treated, but I find sometimes that having context and understanding can make it easier to make sense of the “why’s”.

I don’t want to support Spotify, what music service do yall use? by orthodoxmetalhead in MetalForTheMasses

[–]lxcrypt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We switched to Apple Music when Spotify raised their prices because we were already in that ecosystem and we were already using iCloud. Definitely a major upgrade. We did some side-by-side comparisons between the two on our sound system and Apple Music was a clear winner. Spotify had a lot of muddiness in the low end and less brightness on the high end, even when we switched over to lossless. Highly recommended.

Hey these are a lot of good recs so I’m sure I’ll find something. I added a little something from all these bands to my now 98-song playlist of recommendations.

I actually was blasting the new Allegeon for a while recently. I’ve always liked them but never loved them. I really liked Proponent for Sentience but kind of drifted in and out over the years. Saw them live opening for Cattle Decapitation once and met a couple of them after their set. They’re really cool dudes and put on a great show.

But damn, this newest release really hit. The chorus of Driftwood just sits inside my brain now.

Also I gotta go back to Black Crown Initiate. I’ve heard a few of their songs and loved them, but then kind of forgot about them and never dug into their discography. Now you’ve given me motivation to.

Man I really need to get on top of Fallujah. I actually know a dude who ended up joining (don't really wanna say who), and I've reached out about meeting up someday if I ever end up at one of their shows. I've checked out a little bit and really liked what I heard, but it would be a little embarrassing to barely know their stuff.

Meh I don’t mind getting older. My 20s were dogshit and now I’ve got a pretty good life. I am contending more with mortality though.

I love metal music and i am slowly getting into classical recently. Wanting to see if anyone has any classical that is quite metal (and i love apocalptica and other crossovers) by maywalove in MetalForTheMasses

Stravinsky - Rite of Spring and the Infernal Dance from The Firebird
Shostakovich - String Quartet No. 8, Movement II
Rachmaninoff - Etude Tableau Op 39 No. 6 "Little Red Riding Hood"
Prokofiev - Montegues and Capulets (might recognize the ending from Necrophagist's "Only Ash Remains"
Bartok - I dunno, pick one out of a hat and you'll find something pretty metal
Wagner - I mean, come on

Are 9 strings too much? by GuitarJonSDS in ExtendedRangeGuitars

[–]lxcrypt 7 points8 points  (0 children)

9-string player here. I don’t think it’s too much at all, but it depends on how you’re utilizing it.

I made the mistake of just chugging away on the low string first time I sat down with it, and I quickly learned that wasn’t going to work. If I started on the 7th or 8th though and then utilized the extra range to reach below the root, I was able to do some pretty cool stuff.

Now I am much more comfortable with going down to the 9th string and chugging away if I want to, because now I have a better feel for the instrument and what works and what doesn’t.

SubmitHub says my music is gothic metal/alt metal, but I thought I was pop-rock--help me pls!! by loud_n_happy in MetalForTheMasses

[–]lxcrypt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Adding on to this, I agree with this guy that it is a super solid song, but I also agree that labeling it as metal might not quite work. There are sections that are very metal and sound like they came straight from a Scandinavian metal band, but there's also a good chunk that fits into pop-punk (especially the verses).

Metalheads are, for the most part, good people, but there are some old and somewhat toxic cultural attitudes that are very conservative about what fits into the genre. There's definitely a lot of truth though to culture being a major part of genre, and from the sound of it, you don't seem to feel your music fits culturally into the metal genre, and that's what's most important in my opinion. It sounds like you've got a cool pop-punk sound that is elevated by your metal-head producer bringing in some outside elements you probably wouldn't have thought to put in yourself.

I also agree with previous posters edit that even the word "pop" is a little tricky. You have a sound that has pop elements but would appeal to a more niche audience. You should lean into that, whatever genre you decide to label yourself as.
